Spatiotemporal Distribution, Abundance, and Host Interactions of Invasive Mosquitoes in Pennsylvania

NEVBD researchers from the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station, in partnership with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, recently publish a report of their investigation of the distribution, abundance, host interactions, and West Nile virus infection prevalence of Aedes albopictus and Aedes japonicus mosquitoes in Pennsylvania. Ae. albopictus was distributed in 39 PA counties, while Ae. japonicus was detected in all 67 PA counties between 2010 and 2018. The majority of blood meals for the two mosquito species were derived from mammal hosts, with domestic cats, humans, and white-tailed deer being the most frequent hosts for both mosquitoes. These findings suggest a potential for these two species to be involved in the transmission of human arboviruses including Jamestown Canyon virus, Cache Valley virus, La Crosse, should these become prevalent in the state. CDC is Seeking Pilot Testers for Online Trainings in Tick-Borne Diseases

CDC’s National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases (NCEZID) is seeking health professionals to pilot test one of two online trainings which aim to provide science-based information about either (1) tickborne Arboviral diseases, or (2) Anaplasmosis and Ehrlichiosis diseases. Pilot testers will complete an online training (45-60 minutes) and provide written feedback on the quality and user experience of the training. Testers will receiving continuing education credit once the training is launched. Visit https://bit.ly/TickborneDiseasesTrainings to begin the process, and learn more here!

Special Issues in the Journal Insects

Two special issues are currently accepting manuscript submissions in the journal Insects. Dr. Kirby Stafford, Dr. Scott Williams, and Dr. Megan Linske are guest editors for a special issue highlighting key issues related to ticks, including knowledge gaps on tick distribution, ecology, human exposure risk factors, and best practices for management and control. The deadline to submit a manuscript for this special issue is March 20, 2022. Dr. Benjamin Cull and Dr. Emma Gillingham are guest editors for a special issue highlighting the application of citizen science in vector surveillance. Manuscripts for this special issue should be submitted by March 31, 2022.

Support for CDC Tick Surveillance Activities

The Rickettsial Zoonoses Branch at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is currently seeking additional collaborators to provide recently-collected (2018 to present), field-caught specimens of all feeding life stages of: Amblyomma americanum, Amblyomma maculatum, Dermacentor variabilis, Dermacentor andersoni, Dermacentor occidentalis, and Ixodes scapularis. Specimens should be preserved in 70-95% ethanol and stored at room temperature since the time of collection. Ideally, at least 10 specimens from each geographical location in the US are requested. If you have questions or can assist with this project, please contact Maria Galletti (myu8@cdc.gov), Joy Hecht (ynw5@cdc.gov), or Chris Paddock (cdp9@cdc.gov) for more information.

The National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) established the Vector Control Collaborative (VCC) to match local vector control programs in the United States with demonstrated expertise in the ten capabilities with vector control programs currently looking for guidance, tools and resources, and recommendations to build program capability. Selected local programs will be awarded up to $10,000 in grant funding. NACCHO will issue four awards for the 2022 VCC Cohort, with a goal of creating two mentor-mentee pairs. Applications due next Monday February 7, 2022. Learn more.

Reactive Vector-Borne Disease Policy Leaves US Vulnerable to Outbreaks and Insecticide Resistance

Funding for vector-borne disease surveillance, management, and research is cyclical and reactive in the United States. The subsequent effects have yielded gross inequities nationally that unintentionally support recurrent outbreaks. This policy forum in the Journal of Medical Entomology is comprised of four primary subsections that collectively identify specific areas for improvement and offer innovative solutions to address national inadequacies in vector borne disease policy and infrastructure.

Effects of Tick Surveillance Education on Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices of Local Health Department Employees

University of Illinois researchers recently published results of their student to develop, deliver, and evaluate the effectiveness of tick surveillance training workshops for local health department employees in Illinois. The training program was effective in increasing the knowledge of ticks, tick-borne diseases, and surveillance, as well as promoting positive attitudes toward surveillance.
