Faith Diary
The miraculous catch of fish recounted by Luke in this week’s gospel came when the disciples, weary of fishing all night and catching nothing, still listened to Jesus instructions and ‘put out into deep water’ once more. We each have our own ‘deep water’, that we are reluctant to head into; places or situations we have struggled with and do not want to face again. Like St Peter, we put up objections: "we have toiled all night," "we tried this before and it didn't work," but, if at God’s prompting we face them anyway, we will often find that now we do see results for our efforts. Problems seem to ease, difficult relationships improve, classes or work-places become places of inspiration, our prayer life takes off, and like the fishermen, our faith in him is rewarded to a far greater degree than we could ever have anticipated.
