Loreto Highlights Update - 4th February 2022
Making Marmalade
This week our Gardening Club learnt how to make marmalade.  The pupils picked Seville oranges from a tree in the school garden, then learnt how to use a knife correctly to cut the oranges.  They really enjoyed juicing the oranges and then cutting the peel.  It was a very time-consuming process, however the wait was well worth it with the pupils taking home a jar of their marmalade to try, yummy!
Year 1
This week pupils have been learning about Arctic Animals.  They have created some wonderful Penguin collages and Polar Bear fork paintings, with each polar bear having its own unique character!
Class 1B have thoroughly enjoyed learning about reptiles this week.  We imagined there was a real snake in our school for our creative writing too!
Pupils Fundraise
In school on the 31st of January and 1st of February we raised money for charity by setting up a couple of stalls in the Palm Tree Playground. We had a lemonade stall, guess the sweets in the jar and a raffle. The prize for the raffle is two yummy boxes of chocolates.  My friends helped me do this. They were Dexter, Rohan, Dilan, Zak, Hugo and me Ishaan. We arranged it all ourselves and had great fun doing it. We will be donating the money to Childline, Gibraltar and the Just One Tree charities.

THE BFG
Year 3 pupils are immersing themselves into the wonderful world of Roald Dahl! We are reading the fantastic story of the BFG, and our focus is on using adjectives to describe him. We are learning about the main characters of the story and how Roald Dahl uses descriptive language to paint a picture of his characters in the reader’s mind.
Kung Hei Fat Choi!
This week Foundation Stage 2 have been celebrating Chinese New Year. The pupils enjoyed learning about the Chinese New Year Story. This is the legend of a great race that decided which animals became part of the Zodiac and in what order.
Faith Diary
The miraculous catch of fish recounted by Luke in this week’s gospel came when the disciples, weary of fishing all night and catching nothing, still listened to Jesus instructions and ‘put out into deep water’ once more. We each have our own ‘deep water’, that we are reluctant to head into; places or situations we have struggled with and do not want to face again. Like St Peter, we put up objections: "we have toiled all night," "we tried this before and it didn't work," but, if at God’s prompting we face them anyway, we will often find that now we do see results for our efforts.  Problems seem to ease, difficult relationships improve, classes or work-places become places of inspiration, our prayer life takes off, and like the fishermen, our faith in him is rewarded to a far greater degree than we could ever have anticipated.
Gold Book
Well done to pupils in Lower Primary and Foundation Stage 2 who were presented with their Gold Award certificates and gold pencils.
Peg Patterns
Class 2P have been using peg boards and designed their own patterns.
Pod Casts
Year 5 have started looking at Podcasts as part of their Computer Science lessons. The classes have been listening to various types of podcast and will now be using 'Audacity' to create and edit their own.
Well done!
Pupils in Upper Primary have been working hard to collect house points for their House.  All are making steady progress as they work their way through their ‘Road to Success’. Our fortnightly Awards Assembly celebrates our pupils’ achievements and is thoroughly enjoyed by all. Well done to Saint Catherine's who are the winning House this week.
Monsignor Paul Bear visits Loreto every week. This week Fr. Paul told the children in Years 3 and 4 the story of Moses and he talked about the Ten Commandments.
He spoke to the children about the importance of respecting their parents and to always be good and kind like Jesus.
Next week we will be having a visiting priest – Fr Gavin - in school. He will be addressing the Year 5 and 6 children in assembly on Monday and assist Fr Paul with Confessions for Year 5 on Tuesday morning.
