From the Head of School

Dear Gardner community,

It's a wonderful day to celebrate all types of love - and here at school, there are kind words shared, cards passed, and friendship celebrated. Every child at the Gardner School is known, loved and belongs here.

We were thrilled to see such a strong re-enrollment commitment from our community, and happy to be able to plan ahead for a fantastic 22-23 school year. Today, you'll receive an email from our Director of Business Operations, Sheila Fitzpatrick, with your child's contract for next year. If you applied for tuition assistance, this email will include specific details, too.

Parent teacher conferences are happening this week, and this partnership is critical to support every child as they grow and learn. The goal of conferences is to update each family on how their child is doing academically, socially and emotionally, to celebrate successes and to share areas for growth. Details on conference sign ups are in classroom newsletters.

I hope you have a fantastic week.

Warmly,

COVID-19 Updates

As case rates and hospitalizations decline, states around the country, including Washington, are beginning to shift their approach to the Covid-19 pandemic. We anticipate Governor Inslee and Superintendent Reykdal will outline what this means for schools in the coming weeks. As new guidelines are released, our admin team, Board members, and teachers will review and make a plan for our school, and then changes will be communicated to families through this newsletter.

Our school has navigated the last two years by providing in-person learning using a layered mitigation approach that has served our students and staff well. We've been committed to following the guidelines, and we will continue to do so. Thank you for your continued trust as we move forward together.

News from the PTO
We are happy to partner with the Blanchet House to pack 100 lunch bags to distribute to people who are experiencing homelessness in the community. Our students will participate in a Zoom call with the Blanchet House on Wednesday, February 23rd to learn more about how our students' giving will impact their guests, and teachers will share some picture books and stories to teach our students more about how their acts of kindess can lift others up during a difficult period.

Our PTO is sponsoring all the materials, and our students will be either decorating bags, filling bags, or making sandwiches depending on their ages.
Program Spotlight
Gardner Student Artists
Every child at the Gardner School spends time learning about and expressing their artistic selves. They try out new techniques, experiment with materials, and learn about famous artists from around the world. An arts education has been shown to support students across the disciplines, enhancing math and literacy skills, and also supporting their social-emotional development.

Students in our art classes problem solve, overcome challenges, cheer on their peers, and persist in their work. The reminder that the process is as valuable as the product helps students move forward when feeling stuck. Our students shine as artists, getting to share their talents with one another and their school community.

Looking ahead to the 2022 Giving Gala, you can expect to see some of the beautiful collaborative work from our Gardner student artists. Each classroom will create a beautiful work to be auctioned off. Stay tuned for more details!

Learning in Action

Celebrating 100 Days in School!
Many of our classrooms hosted special learning moments to celebrate the 100th Day of School. In Mazama, students used a large chart to track objects and to practice counting to 100. The students discovered that quantity isn't represented by size, but by value, and practiced 1:1 correlation while counting out their items for the classroom chart.

Campus snapshots

The math learning across campus continued with measurements and calculations in classrooms, and students enjoyed the sunny days with nature explorations!
