Greetings to all our newsletter readers. We’ve enjoyed paging through some back issues recently, and it has been nice to be reminded of some interesting articles from the past three decades, such as ‘Temple of type’ (about St Bride Printing Library) by Robin Kinross, from Eye no. 2, and ‘Art and ambiguity’ (about Melanie Mues’s identity design for the Venice Biennale Arte 2019) in Eye 99.

The new type special issue is getting even further around the globe. We’re always pleased to see your Instagram videos; some even have musical accompaniment – have a look via this ‘Eye 102 at large’ link. (You have to be logged into an Instagram account to see it.)

Eye 102 includes Jan Middendorp’s interview of Laura Meseguer (above, photo by Francesco Brembati) and Thilo von Debschitz’s profile of 100-year-old Joe Caroff (designer of the West Side Story poster, below), perhaps the most famous graphic designer you’ve never heard of. (We’re grateful to the mighty Steven Heller for introducing us to Thilo, whose book about Fritz Kahn was featured in Eye 75’s ‘Machine head’, written by Rick Poynor, our writer at large.  

Talking of our Instagram account, you may have noticed a few changes. In normal times, we usually publish extracts from the latest issue’s articles and reviews on our website. However eyemagazine.com is currently undergoing some repair work, so there won’t be any new posts in the next few weeks. 

To make up for this, we have published some Eye 102 extracts on Instagram (where we now have more than 60k followers), to give potential readers an idea of what’s in the issue: you can read short texts about Thomas Huot-Marchand, Laura Meseguer, November, ‘Typographics 21’, the Nebiolo legacy and of course Joe Caroff (who also designed the 007 logo, below).

In the run up to the next issue I’d like to recommend a few articles on our website, such as this Eye 59 Reputations interview with Richard Hollis written by Christopher Wilson; ‘The work must be read’, Russell Homes’s cover feature about the late Lawrence Weiner in Eye 29; and ‘Sans serifs in suburbia’, Simon Esterson’s tribute to Sainsbury’s own-brand packaging in Eye 87, the food special. 

We are doing our best to update the Eye Events page while site maintenance continues, so you can see details of exhibitions such as ‘Ed Fella: Exit Level Design, 1985–2012’ (above), just opened at the University of Reading in the UK, and ‘Fanette Mellier – Feuilles volantes’ (below) in Chaumont, France.The Ed Fella show runs until 25 March, while Fanette’s continues until 31 March. You can read more about Fella here, including Rick’s ‘Fellapages’ in Eye 23, a few copies of which (to our amazement) are still in print, available via the Eye shop run by ESco.

There will be more videos before very long.
