My Love Affair with the Laser Cutter

Last fall, I took a class called Makerspace, which is Sac City’s version of Hacker Lab, in fact through their partnership I actually took the class at Hackerlabs location on R and 26th streets. I learned how to use the Spartan laser cutter to cut all kinds of shapes from acrylic, paper, and wood. It’s fun, scary, powerful, and hypnotic to watch (view video).

After some trial and error, but thankfully no fires, I cut some shapes I was happy with. I made small signage samples, delicate paper shapes, wooden Christmas monster ornaments with my son, and little plastic drinking vessels.

The paper shapes found their way into a series called That Look From Mom. The series is 30 small works made in 30 days that combine collage, paint, and line drawings of my favorite moms. Each piece is named for that look on their face and what they are likely saying to their kids.

You can view these works on this webpage. Please get in touch if any of them speak to you. Each 6x6 mixed media collage on wood panel is $75 plus shipping or free porch pickup in Sacramento.
