The Future Begins Here
Starting the new year and spring semester with a future-focused initiative, The City College of New York is now directly connected to the COSMOS beyond-5G advanced wireless research testbed, which is supported by a multimillion-dollar investment from the National Science Foundation. Situated in one of the nation's first FCC-designated Innovation Zones—stretching from CCNY and West Harlem to Columbia University, as shown—the testbed provides a real-world environment for research that will revolutionize wireless networking and high-speed communications. Visiting Professorship Is Lasting Gift
Physicist Myriam P. Sarachik's legacy at City College, where she spent more than 50 years teaching and conducting groundbreaking research before her death at age 88 last October, is set to continue, thanks to a $1.5 million pledge before her passing. The pledge establishes the Myriam Sarachik Professorship Fund for a visiting Physics professor in CCNY's Division of Science.

COVID and Communities: Dominican Experience A new study from the CUNY Dominican Studies Institute and CUNY School of Medicine, both based at CCNY, finds that people of Dominican origin in the United States are highly likely to comply with public health recommendations related to the pandemic. In addition to understanding how COVID-19 has affected the Dominican community, the study aims to encourage further research on the effects of the pandemic on ethnic groups within the U.S. Theresearch monographauthors areRamona Hernández, director of the CUNY Dominican Studies Institute; Associate Medical Professor Nancy Sohler, of the CUNY School of Medicine; and the Dominican Studies Institute's Pedro Ortega, PhD, and Sarah Marrara.
STEM Research Rewarded at Conference
Senior Nowrin Nisa is the recipient of a Presentation Award from the 2021 SACNAS National Diversity in STEM Digital Conference. Nisa was recognized for her research and presentation titled "Exploring the Effects of COVID-19 on Employees at Community-Based Organizations Serving Upper Manhattan." A Psychology major at CCNY's Colin Powell School for Civic and Global Leadership with a double minor in Chemistry and Biology within CCNY's Division of Science, Nisa is mentored in her research by Associate Medical Professor Erica Lubetkin of the CUNY School of Medicine at CCNY.
I Am CCNY: Nathan Ferraz, Class of 2022 Major: I was inspired to major in Jazz Studies (Vocal), in the Division of Humanities and the Arts, by my mother, who is a Brazilian jazz musician and composer. I was also inspired by my infinite admiration for jazz music and for giants like Miles Davis, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan and Chet Baker. CCNY Opportunities and Programs: Being a recipient of the Kaye Scholarship has allowed me to stay in school through the financial hardships I faced during the COVID-19 pandemic. The AccessAbility Center/Student Disability Services team has always been there to help me through the challenges of going to college with bipolar disorder. CCNY Highlights: I faced many hardships throughout my college journey, including immigration status, poverty and mental illness, but through those hardships, I found strength. CCNY has been the instrument to my successes academically, professionally and personally. Working part-time as a private voice, piano and violin teacher with kids, I have the opportunity to put into practice the amazing things I have learned in the Jazz program.
Making Dreams Come True
For alumnus Ciro Scala, CCNY 2020, a degree was the goal. Yet the experience yielded a vision both broader and deeper. As chronicled this month in The New York Times, Scala made his start at City College in 1959 and returned decades later to pursue his long-held ambition to earn his degree. In fact, Scala earned two degrees: a BA (Political Science and History) and MA (History). As that chapter closed, Scala immediately opened a new one with CCNY, specifically the Colin Powell School for Civic and Global Leadership. "He reached out right after graduating…to find out how he could get involved to support new students," Andrew Rich, Richard J. Henley and Susan L. Davis Dean of the Colin Powell School, has said. "He particularly wanted to help first generation students find their way; and over the past two years, under his leadership, we have launched new First Generation Workshops and a whole series of initiatives aimed at assisting those CCNY students who are the first in their families to attend college."

Class years ending in zero, one, two, five, six and seven will be honored at events welcoming all alumni this spring. Dates and details are to be announced.
