1. At events nationwide, hope rises that abortion ruling will be overturned
(CNS) - A renewed spirit of hope reverberated through events nationwide that marked the 49th anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion. From Vermont to Los Angeles, thousands of people were buoyed by the prospect that the court would reverse its 1973 Roe decision by upholding a Mississippi law banning most abortions after 15 weeks. The ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization is expected in early summer. In Montpelier, Vermont, hundreds of people bundled in parkas and boots against temperatures that hovered near zero during the annual Rally for Life at the Vermont State House on Jan. 22. MORE

2. What’s the Future of Abortion in America After ‘Roe’?

(DC) - Following the United States Supreme Court’s review of the Mississippi state law limiting abortion at 15 weeks gestation, most legal analysts agree that a change is coming to abortion policy in America. For pro-life advocates, it will be a welcome change — a move towards promoting a culture of life and not death. But what exactly will the future of abortion policy be? The answer is complex and could look as different as the 50 states that make up this country. In December, the Supreme Court reviewed Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization and considered whether a state can limit abortion at 15 weeks gestation. Dobbs allowed the justices to revisit Roe v. Wade — the case that legalized abortion across the country. Pro-life groups responded optimistically to the court’s review of the case and with good reason. MORE

3. The status of American abortion facilities: Telemedicine’s impact in 2021
(Operation Rescue) The number of abortion facilities in the U.S. increased in 2021, to the highest levels in 13 years, according to results from Operation Rescue’s annual survey of U.S. abortion facilities. Today there is a total of 720 in the U.S. – 14 more than were operating in 2020. This represents the largest increase in abortion facilities since Operation Rescue began tracking them in 2009. A total of 41 new abortion locations opened or resumed abortions in 2021, while there were 27 abortion facilities that closed or halted abortions. At the end of 2021, there were eight additional facilities that had temporarily suspended abortions until further notice but were expected to resume theme in the near future. Other noteworthy facts were revealed by Operation Rescue’s survey of every U.S. abortion facility: Since Operation Rescue began tracking the number of abortion facilities in 2009, surgical abortion facilities have decreased in number by 265; Today, there are 448 surgical and 272 chemical abortion facilities operating in the U.S.; Overall, the number of abortion pill facilities rose by 24 locations, while the number of surgical abortion facilities fell by 10; The number of Planned Parenthood abortion facilities rose slightly in 2021.  Planned Parenthood affiliated clinics now account for 54 percent of all abortion facilities nationwide; The number of abortion facilities/businesses that use telemedicine to distribute abortion drugs rose a significant 44 percent in 2021 to a record high of 123 locations.  Those now account for 17 percent of all abortion facilities nationwide. 4. Poll: Majority support legal limits on abortion, oppose taxpayer funding
(CNS) - A new Knights of Columbus/Marist Poll shows that 71% of Americans support legal limits on abortion and a majority of Americans — 54% — oppose taxpayer funding of abortion.
In addition, the poll found that 81% of Americans believe laws can protect both the mother and her unborn child. Results of the survey conducted by the Marist Poll were released Jan. 20, a day ahead of the 49th annual March for Life in Washington marking the anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision legalizing abortion nationwide. For more than a decade the survey has been commissioned annually by Knights of Columbus, based in New Haven. “When it comes to the direction of government policy, there has been consistency and consensus in American public opinion on the issue of abortion over the decades,” said Barbara Carvalho, director of the Marist Poll. “As we await a decision in the Supreme Court case Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, our polling continues to show that over 60% of Americans reject the central holding of Roe v. Wade, and want to return the decision to the states or make abortion illegal,” Supreme Knight Patrick Kelly said. MORE

5. Missed the March for Life? Here it is, in a 45-second video
(CNA) - Missed the March for Life? Well, can you watch the whole thing in the time it takes to say three Hail Marys. As it has done in the past, the pro-life group Students for Life released a 45-second-long time-lapse video of the marchers filing past an elevated camera set up along the route. The turnout for the Jan. 21 march in Washington, D.C., as you can see, was huge. While it's not the practice of the march's organizers or the police to provide specific estimates of the size of the crowd, Students for Life, calculates that about 150,000 people paraded past its camera post. "The cold couldn't dampen the spirits of the Pro-Life Generation who knew we were celebrating the last anniversary of Roe v. Wade," the group, officially Students for Life of America, tweeted on Friday. "The largest human rights march in the world IS against abortion." You can watch the march video below. MORE
