Old Mobile Phones Get a New Life

The West Metro Recycling Centre and Hello Initiative, a local WA youth charity, have partnered to collect old mobile phones for reuse.

Mobile phone and internet access are key components that enable vulnerable young people to complete their court orders, reduce offending behaviours, and access essential services. Latest statistics from Hello Initiative’s Mobile Support Program reveal that 64% of young people engaged in this program have reduced their offending behaviour. Young people are also using their smartphone to access other positive services, with 67% of young people using their Hello Initiative referral to engage with education and training institutions.

With an estimated 25 million unused mobile phones stored in Australian homes, approximately 20 million of them still in working condition, the West Metro Recycling Centre is aiming to encourage responsible reuse and repair, and to assist the program by collecting old smartphones that will reach and support more vulnerable young people.

To find out more, contact the West Metro Recycling Centre on (08) 9384 4003 or visit the Hello Initiative website.
