About SBWN

Scottish BAME Writers Network provides advocacy, literary events, and development opportunities for BAME writers based in or from Scotland. You can visit our website for more info, contact us through e-mail, or catch us on Twitter. We also have an online Facebook group for Black and POC writers.

Happy 2022!

Welcome to the start of another year with SBWN! Join us as we look back at 2021, announce big changes to the SBWN team, debut a new writers group, and kick off a 2022 full of exciting events and programming.

We'd also like to thank all of you for your support over the last year! It's been so inspiring to see the creativity and connections coming out of the network. We're really looking forward to seeing what emerges from our wonderful community in the coming year!

2021 Reflections – Dean and Jeda in conversation with Nasim Rebecca Asl

In a special video post, SBWN Co-directors Jeda Pearl Lewis and Dean Atta share their reflections on 2021 and plans for 2022 with Nasim Rebecca Asl.

They discuss some of SBWN’s partnerships, events including the conference, behind-the-scenes work including access and some of their hopes and plans for 2022.

This is also our farewell to Dean, who is stepping down as co-director – find out why in this video! (Spoiler: it involves three new books...) We'll miss him greatly, and are so thankful for his many amazing contributions as a part of the SBWN committee. Fortunately he plans to remain an active member of the SBWN community; we're excited to see what he does next!

Nasim Rebecca Asl is a member of the SBWN community and is a Glasgow based poet and journalist whose work has appeared in multiple magazines. She is currently taking part in the Poetry Translation Centre’s Polylingual Poets Please programme. In 2021 she was awarded a Scottish Book Trust New Writers Award for Poetry and appeared on Damian Barr’s The Big Scottish Book Club.

Asian Writers Group 2022

Calling all Asian writers in/from Scotland!

Following our Asian Writers Focus Group that was held last year, SBWN is excited to announce the creation of our new Asian Writers Group! This free group is open to writers of East Asian, Southeast Asian, South Asian, West Asian, and/or mixed heritage based in/from Scotland.

Join us on 16 February at 7pm online for our first session, facilitated by Kelly Kanayama. We’ll discuss how we envision the Asian Writers Group going forward, go over how best to implement and address the points brought up in last year’s focus group, and share our goals for coming together as a writing community.
