CSLR Announces Search for Executive Director

The Center for the Study of Law and Religion at Emory University (CSLR) seeks a highly energetic and entrepreneurial Executive Director to advance its mission and manage its operations. 

The Executive Director will lead the internal and outward-facing activities of CSLR, including securing adequate resources to support its growth; growing the next generation of law and religion fellows and scholars; collaborating with other Emory centers on common projects; building and stewarding relationships with alumni, donors, and community leaders to enable CSLR to deliver on its core mission of producing and disseminating leading scholarship in law and religion.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

  • Work with the CSLR faculty directors to determine the overall vision and strategy for the Center each year, and then work independently to implement that vision
  • Manage CSLR’s operations budget and finances, working in collaboration with relevant officers and units within the university
  • Recruit and lead CSLR staff, post-doctoral fellows, visiting scholars, and student fellows
  • Develop and execute successful fundraising strategies and grant-writing
  • Create new and support existing CSLR-sponsored research projects and programs
  • Manage CSLR’s Journal of Law and ReligionCanopy Forum, and other public communications, including its website, annual report, brochures, and social media releases
  • Manage CSLR’s educational efforts – including degree programs, courses, internships, and student forums in law and religion
  • organize public and private forums and roundtables for rigorous academic exchange

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in a discipline related to program work and seven years of related experience which includes two years at a management level
  • OR equivalent combination of education, experience, and training

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Juris Doctor (JD), Master's Degree, PhD, or equivalent higher degree and have at least five years of comparable professional experience
  • Familiarity with academic life, and with the study of law and religion
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Experience in leading administrative teams, managing bureaucracy, and resolving conflicts with transparency, compassion, and integrity
  • A strong record of successful fundraising
  • Confidence and skill in public speaking and negotiation
  • Strong writing and written presentation skills
  • Basic familiarity with budgeting and accounting


CSLR’s Mission

Now in its 40th year of operation, CSLR offers pathbreaking research, scholarship, teaching, and public education on the interactions of law and religion around the world. The Center is a hub in the global network of 1,600 law and religion scholars and operates a 10,000-person mailing list. CSLR offers 6 advanced degree programs; 15 cross-listed graduate level courses; student and postdoc research fellowships; ongoing major research projects; two book series with Cambridge University Press and Eerdmans Publishing; the flagship Journal of Law and Religion, an imprint of Cambridge University Press; a thriving online publication, Canopy Forum; the Interactions podcast; and a substantial social media presence. CSLR’s projects and faculty have to date published more than 360 volumes, with some of our major titles translated into as many as 15 languages.

CSLR is a nonpartisan research center that does not engage in direct political advocacy and is not affiliated with a particular religious tradition or school of thought. The ideal candidate for this Executive Director position will be committed to, and responsible for, promoting the success of others, working in teams, fostering scholarly community and conversations, and facilitating innovative projects that incorporate a wide range of perspectives, scholarly methods, and areas of study, while maintaining a high standard of excellence and integrity throughout.
 

Selection Process

Review of applications will begin February 15, 2022, and continue until the position is filled. The position will begin no later than August 1, 2022. Applicants are asked to submit:

  1. A letter of interest describing the candidate’s reasons for applying (not to exceed three pages),
  2. Resume, and
  3. The names and contact information of three individuals prepared to provide professional references.
