A Life Disrupted Our lives are often on auto-pilot. We follow our daily schedules. Sometimes this patterned life is interrupted by a major, unexpected disruption. How do we respond to such a disruption – and might it be a good thing?

1. Revise current Personnel Manual language on page 6, “The Board has sole authority to hire Church staff members,” to “The Minister takes the lead in the selection, hiring, supervision, and discharge of all paid staff,” in order to bring it in line with the Governance Manual Section 2, page 6. Appointment of new members to Marketing and Communications Committee (Mark Whittaker, Nancy Latimer, Michael Safran, and Maria Lauro) and Stewardship Committee (Ebe Emmons, Jean Schmidt, Jennifer Layman, Scott Smith, Lynn Porterfield, Ward Kelsey, Al Schwartz, Maria Lauro, Eleanor Mayfield). This fills out these committees. Motion by Heather Masterson, second by Sam Hens-Greco. Motion carried unanimously.
3. Approve the “Solar Installation Agreement” provided by Envinity, using the “Cash Purchase with Envinity internal Financing” option; authorize up to $100,000 for the project; and authorize the Treasurer, in consultation with the Finance and Investment Committees, to select the most appropriate sources of funding for the project. 4. Minor change to bylaws to Bylaws to address members who return to the church after losing membership. Article 3 Section 4, add to end of paragraph 2: “If a Member is taken to have voluntarily resigned for failure to provide a financial contribution of record during a previous year, but then makes a financial contribution of record during a subsequent year, the Member is not required to re-sign the Membership Register to regain membership.” Motion by Kyle Gracey, second by Kate Snow. Motion carried unanimously. (This Bylaw change will need to be approved by the congregation at the annual meeting.)
5. Revised language for church activities:
All church activities that do not involve congregational singing or serving food are authorized, at the Minister's discretion, provided all of the following safety precautions are followed:

The following activities are not permitted until explicitly approved by the Board of Trustees:
· Any congregational singing, and

Thanks from the Matilda Theiss Health Center
Matilda Theiss Health Center
Here's a heartwarming "thank you" for the toys and gift cards we delivered to the Matilda Theiss Health Center. We DO make a difference! Many thanks again to the congregation and the Social Justice Endowment.
"I just wanted to let you know, again, how much our patients enjoyed the toys you donated! The families were so happy – they all urged me to pass on their thanks to you. You and your congregation helped brighten Christmas morning for so many families! Thank you seems so inconsequential, compared to all your group provided for our families – but they all very much appreciated the toys and gift cards.
The gift cards were such a wonderful and welcome surprise! We chose to distribute half of the gift cards to our homebound seniors, who were so grateful - I cannot begin to tell you how many times they thanked us! Many of these seniors are forgotten or have no family around, and rely on our doctors for socialization at their home visits. With limited food resources, the Giant Eagle gift cards were a perfect fit for both the families and seniors."
EECM
EECM Shelter Meal As of now, March, April, and May are wide open.
Please let Sam know if you would like to be the monthly coordinator for one of these months.
It seems to work well when someone is assigned as the coordinator for the month, and then I can ask anyone who wants to volunteer to contact the coordinator.
Please contact Sam if you would like to coordinate and/or whether you would like to volunteer to help out for a specific month.
If anyone would like to start thinking about organizing that with him, that would be great.

Sunday Religious Education
Religious education has resumed!
We are meeting in person in the Schweitzer Room on Sundays, from 11:30 - 12:30. Both children and adults must be masked. We are meeting at a very low room capacity, so at the moment, we do not anticipate issues with social distancing. If you have any questions or concerns about other precautions we are taking, please reach out to me and I will be happy to give you more information.
We are starting up a roleplaying game for the Sunday children! Hero Kids is an RPG designed by a parent for children ages 4 - 9, to introduce them to playing roleplaying systems. In Hero Kids, the children each play a character that lives in a village where the adults are always going off on adventures, and the kids end up keeping things in order while they are away! We will explore teamwork, problem solving, and even UU values in hypothetical situations as we play in this fantasy adventure!
Racial Justice Book Groups Are you interested in learning more about racial justice through open, loving, honest conversations with some of your First UU community? The Racial Justice Task Force is organizing a second group to read and discuss "Waking Up White" by Debby Irving. Our first group is over halfway through and has had a wonderful time learning about ourselves and the society we live in; interested in reading another book focused on racism or racial justice? We're open to that too! Please send your interest toRacialJustice@first-unitarian-pgh.org. Groups will be convened based on the schedules of those interested.
The “Chalice Weekly Newsletter” is organized around the four areas of our mission, with each of the areas featured on a rotating basis:
Inspire (first week of the month, with the month’s Sunday service topics, minister’s column, and news from the Inspire Council)
Learn (second week of the month, with lifespan religious education news, religious educator’s column, and news from the Learn Council)
Connect (third week of the month, with news about connections-related activities such as Covenant Groups, and other news from the Connections Council)
Serve (fourth week of the month, with news about social justice and service-related activities such as Green Sanctuary and Habitat for Humanity, and other news from the Serve Council)
Information about upcoming events will be included on a timely basis, ideally beginning three weeks or more before the event. If you have questions, please contact Cicely Moultrie, Communications Coordinator, at cmoultrie@first-unitarian-pgh.org.
