In a 4-3 decision, the North Carolina Supreme Court struck down the partisan gerrymandered maps drawn up by the NCGOP. The Supreme Court declared that state courts do have the authority to toss maps that are drawn with the intention of giving Republicans a long-term advantage.
The court's majority opinion stated "Achieving partisan advantage incommensurate with a political party's level of statewide voter support is neither a compelling nor a legitimate governmental interest".
The Court ordered the legislature to redraw the maps and explain how the new boundaries are "fair". The majority opinion also directed lawmakers to use election and population figures to determine if racially polarized voting is sufficient in an area to require the drawing of districts that would protect Black voting strength.
The newly drawn maps must be submitted by 5 p.m. on February 18th and then must be approved by a three-judge panel by noon on February 23rd. Not meeting this deadline would mean that the judges would be tasked with selecting a plan.
Precinct Meeting
The Cherokee County Democratic Party will hold a virtual Precinct Meeting on Saturday, February 12th at 11am. A make-up meeting will take place (if needed) Saturday, February 19th at 1pm.
All registered Democrats residing in Cherokee County are invited to attend.
