Dear Families,

You are receiving this newsletter because your student applied to study abroad and listed you as their emergency contact. We believe families are an important part of the study abroad experience, and our goal is to help you understand the study abroad process so that you can best support your student.

You can expect to receive a newsletter from SCU Study Abroad once a month from January - May about your student's current phase of the study abroad process, with additional announcements in between, as needed.

Have questions?

Please feel free to contact our team or encourage your student to connect with us through email at studyabroad@scu.edu. Email is often the best way to reach our advisors initially, especially if we need to follow-up with other campus departments at SCU or program providers and host institutions abroad (which can mean communicating across different time zones) before we can answer your question. We also have a Live Chat feature and various advising opportunities on the Advising section of our website at www.scu.edu/studyabroad.

Family Resources

We understand that the decision to send your student on a study program overseas may be a difficult one: there are safety and financial issues to consider, and there are many programs, with different types of experiences to choose from. We also understand that the decision to study abroad is often one involving many loved ones.

We encourage you to review our Family Resources to help your student make an informed decision regarding this incredible opportunity.

Application Review Process

Nomination announcements for study abroad are expected to go out by the end of the day on February 4, 2022Delays in the nomination timeline can occur. Students will be notified via email if nomination announcements are changed to later date.

All students must meet eligibility requirements for study abroad in order to participate in a global experience. Applications are evaluated by a trained review committee of SCU faculty/staff using the application criteria and essay grading rubric. The Application Review Committee will conclude its review in early February.

Important Conversations

While students and families wait to hear back about the Application Review Committee's results, please be sure to discuss your student's participation in a study abroad experience:

Be Ready to Confirm Participation

If students are nominated to study abroad, they will have 1 week after receiving their nomination status to confirm their participation in their program.

Confirming their participation will allow us to move students into Phase 2 of the study abroad process, where they begin working with the program provider or host institution they've been nominated for. Please be sure to speak with your student about their participation in study abroad so they are ready to confirm their participation.

Phase 1: Students apply directly to SCU to study abroad.
Phase 2: Students who are nominated to study abroad by SCU will be required to submit a program-specific application.

Costs & Withdrawal Fees

Be sure you and your student understand the costs of a study abroad experience and withdrawal fees, prior to confirming their participation.

Once a student confirms their participation in a study abroad program, they will be liable for withdrawal fees. At a minimum, they will be responsible for a $500 withdrawal fee from SCU if they later decide not to participate.

However, after a student submits their phase 2 application and gets closer to their departure date, they could owe a portion (if not all) of their program costs depending on their program's specific withdrawal policies.

If a student declines their nomination in February instead of confirming their participation, they will not be charged any withdrawal fees.

Apply for (or Renew) Passport

There have been significant processing delays due to the impacts of the global pandemic. If your student needs to apply or renew their passport, please be sure they start the process now.

All students need a passport to travel internationally, and depending on their nationality/program location, they may also need to apply for a visa at a later date. To apply for a visa they'll need to have a valid passport, so this is a critical first step.
