ecoBYTE // February 2022

Hello <<First Name>>,

I've heard it said that January was the 30 day free trial period of 2022, and now we're into the paid-up version. It's been an anxious time for many as we navigate our way through the health orders of the day. It isn't slowing things down though. My apologies in advance for a long ecoBYTE this month.

TODAY IS WORLD WETLANDS DAY >> In keeping with the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands theme for this year's world day, I'm inviting you to take action by participating in the Values. Voices. Action. phase of the MOSSES AND MARSHES project by clicking the link below. It'll lead you to some background info and a link to a form that we're (Andrew Howe and I) using as the starting point of face-to-face sessions. This invitation to contribute to the conversation will happen in different formats over the coming year, with the aim of creating a list of actions we can all help make happen. It's about starting where you are now, acting in even small ways. Check out some of the actions that have been pledged on the World Wetlands Day website. There are various other touchpoints with the project and their respective wetlands as well— actions in themselves. I'd love to see you at one of our events in Australia — there are more details about those in this issue of ecoBYTE.

VALUES. VOICES. ACTION.
MOSSES AND MARSHES IN CANBERRA >> 15 April - 1 May, M16 Artspace, Griffith ACT

We're now preparing for the first Australian showing of MOSSES AND MARSHES. Andrew is preparing new work to ship to Australia for this exhibition. There is an invitation-only, private opening being planned for 14 April, with restricted numbers due to public health orders. The list for this is being put together at the moment. I'll share the gallery prepared invitation for the show in the next ecoBYTE. This is one for the calendar if you're planning on spending Easter in Canberra.

MACQUARIE MARSHES SOUND WALK >>  20-21 May, 2022 are the dates you need to note for the long-promised field trip to the Marshes as part of the MOSSES AND MARSHES public events program. I've been talking about this as a deep listening field trip—and it is, but to keep it simple, you'll be hearing about it as a sound walk...except it's much more than that.

There are still a few details still to iron out but much of the itinerary is now sorted and bookings will be live on Eventbrite from the end of February. I'll be sharing the link in the next ecoBYTE. PLACES ARE LIMITED due to the guided nature of the field trip. Once bookings have been filled a waiting list will be set up.

FRIDAY, 20 MAY (Dubbo to Coonamble is 160km)
2pm // Meet at Outback Arts Creative Arts Space at Coonamble for a tour and talk of the MOSSES AND MARSHES exhibition. Following this, you'll be asked to fuel up, stock up on provisions (snacks/water), and join us for a pub dinner before an early night.

SATURDAY, 21 MAY (it's about 300km from Coonamble to Warren via Burrima)
*day trip option - to meet at Burrima at 10am

7.30am // Leave Coonamble for Marshes via Carinda to see the northern end of the Wambuul/Macquarie River at Bells Bridge - brief stop
*10am // Meet at front gates of Burrima on the Warren/Carinda Road for everyone to enter together. There are still some details to come about this part of the trip, but this is where we'll be doing the guided sound walk using some of my sound recording equipment as well as our ears. There'll be a picnic lunch provided and time to explore on your own. Burrima has toilets and an undercover picnic area.
2pm // Leave for Warren and the Window on the Wetlands Centre via a brief stop at the Monkeygar Creek crossing on Gibson's Way to see the birdlife on the lagoons.
4-4.30pm // Arrive in Warren to briefly hear and see more info about the Marshes at the Window on the Wetlands Centre before dispersing to head home or to stay overnight in Warren. You can grab fuel here too. The Tiger Bay Wetlands are right next door, so if staying overnight, you can explore them the next morning.

COST //  $110pp (GST incl.) for 2 days includes a tour of the exhibition and artist talk on Friday, entry to Burrima, guided experience, and picnic lunch on Saturday...OR $88pp (GST incl) for the Saturday only option, including entry to Burrima, guided experience, and picnic lunch.

REQUIREMENTS // Your own roadworthy transport (SUV/4WDs not necessary but a spare tyre is a must, and water, a tarp and toilet paper are useful), book your own Coonamble accommodation — a list of options will be provided, bring water and snacks, arrive at the Burrima gates at 10am sharp on the Saturday to get through the security entry, wear closed shoes/boots at Burrima, bring sunscreen and a hat, and be willing to follow all public health orders of the day.

This event is supported by the NSW Government through Create NSW, Outback Arts, and the Macquarie Wetlands Association.

WE STILL WANT YOUR FEEDBACK
IT TAKES LESS THAN 5 MINUTES TO COMPLETE

I put this call out to you late last year, but we're still interested in hearing from you if you were part of the panel discussion on 11 November or have bought and read a copy of the MOSSES AND MARSHES book. Did you find it interesting? What thoughts did it provoke? Did you learn anything new about wetlands? Have you had conversations with others about it? Has it made you think differently about anything?

We'd also love a few more testimonials we can share in our marketing around the book too, particularly given a second round of sales will open in April.

INHALARE EXHIBITION >> 15 May - 16 June, SPACE Gallery, Coonabarabran NSW

The Inhalare/breathe upon project is in Stage 2, with our six visual artists now sitting with the soundscapes and texts they were provided by the Stage 1 artists, preparing visual responses to the special natural environments at the centre of this project.

While these works are being prepared, we're planning exhibition and presentation opportunities. The first showing of the works together will be at the perfectly located SPACE Gallery in Coonabarabran*, where we'll be testing the accessibility elements we've built into this project from the start, ensuring people can access the works and possibly connect with these environments no matter their age or ability. This is an exciting part of the project. We're in the process of applying for a grant to help with the development and promotion of the accessibility elements and the exhibition as a whole. More details to come.

*Coonabarabran is the gateway to the Warrumbungle National Park and Pilliga State Forest, on the Newell Highway. The Newell is a major inland intra and interstate route from Melbourne to Brisbane. SPACE Gallery is a social enterprise creative space run alongside the Creatives Collective — an ARI for artists with disabilities.

This project has been supported by the NSW Government through Create NSW, Orana Arts, Australian Cultural Fund crowdfunding, and ecoPULSE.

MORE ABOUT INHALARE
JOIN ME, 7pm AEDT TONIGHT, WED 2 FEBRUARY on Zoom >> Tonight I'm facilitating an Orana Arts roundtable conversation with four artists working in the environmental field, about the role of artists in documenting nature and extending the ideas of science. They are Jo Roberts and Jason Richardson, Allison Reynolds and Stephan de Wit van der Merwe. I'm looking forward to sharing their work and thoughts in front of a live audience. You'll need to get a Zoom link by registering on the Orana Arts What's On page at least an hour before the event.

I look forward to sharing more with you as all these projects progress.

The sound of this country is one long sustained note that does not end. It is a humming that holds all the other music of this place in harmony. Every other sound is threaded upon it.
