Fund your Kai Connections event

There's nothing like a bit of shared kai for connecting hearts and minds, and WRT is all about sharing the kai and the aroha!

We are delighted at this year's Neighbours Day theme and that we'll be coordinating the gatherings for the second year on Waiheke with support from the Waiheke Local Board. We're reaching out to you because we think your community group would be great at hosting a Neighbours Day event. Here's how it'll work this year...

This year's theme for Neighbours Day is Kai Connections, encouraging community to engage over kai – growing, sharing, eating.

Between 18 - 27 March, we hope to see a variety of events all over Waiheke that connect people over a shared love for food and produce. Together with the Waiheke Local Board, we are offering local community groups (you) up to $400 to run a Kai connecting event for the local Waiheke community to enjoy. The aim of these events is to forge connections, introducing or reconnecting people to your community hub and the people living in the neighbourhood. This helps create year-round supportive actions and friendly, safer communities, alongside sharing a love of Kai.

What you need to know
  • The Neighbours Day website has resources to support your event.
  • Waiheke Local Board can provide administrative support for your event, such as printing invitations.
  • WRT can help you spread the word online about your event.
  • You will need to send one of your organising team to a Zero Waste Workshop at 6pm on Thursday 17 March at the Sustainability Centre.
  • Events can go ahead at all Traffic Lights. You will just need to be responsible for checking the vaccine passes of your attendees.
  • Funding must be spent on catering, administering and supporting your event (not alcohol or cigarettes etc).
  • You will need to write a brief overview of your event that meets the kai connections criteria, and later report on numbers of attendees, with photographs.

Submit your event ideas to us via email.

It might be a crop swap, a kai gardening workshop, a cookery demonstration or a kai poetry slam. The only rules are that it must create new connections between locals on the topic of kai. We're really excited to hear your ideas. Please send us your suggestions by 5pm Friday 11 February.

Neighbours Day

If you'd like to know more about Neighbours Day or download resources to support your event you can get these straight from their website.

How Neighbours Day fits with the Waiheke Resources Trust's project areas:
Access the community fridge and pantry from Waiheke Sustainability Centre to support your Neighbours Day event.

The Kai Conscious community fridge and pantry is accessible 24/7 and topped up by our team of food rescuers from 1pm on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Fridays. Please consider this a further resource to cater for your event.

We do ask that everyone respects the need to mask up, sign in, sanitise and keep physically distanced when accessing the fridge.
