What We're Into

  • There are gaps between growing genres in podcasting and new show launches. Jack Wilson at Acast discusses opportunities for new shows to thrive in the wider podcasting landscape by "focusing on growing categories where production has not yet fulfilled demand." While listenership in Fiction and True Crime experienced noteworthy growth this past year, both genres represented just over 1% of new Acast shows launched. Check out Acast's free online toolkit for creators including resources and tips from research and scripting, to editing, promotion and monetization.
  • Register for this free online audio archiving workshop on February 8, covering best practices in audio preservation and resources for independent audio producers on how best to organize and safeguard your audio collections.
  • "Your ability to tell stories on your podcast is more important than the timbre of voice," says Evo Terra, while reminding us to hone our storytelling skills. Being a good storyteller is essential to connecting with and engaging your audience. It's a skill that every podcaster either has or can acquire. Terra shares a clever method created by Dawn Fraser to help podcasters tell better stories.
  • The inauguration for the RAIN (Radio, Audio, Internet News) Podcast Business Lunch, presented by NPR and Triton Digital, will be presented virtually on February 2 with special guest Tom Webster of Edison Research. The weekly knowledge series will be held every Wednesday at 12pm ET featuring a line up of notable guests. Register to attend.

What We're Listening To

  • From Us: In this week's episode of How to Talk to [Mamí & Papí] about Anything we hear from Alberto, a first-gen entrepreneur, on his experience telling his immigrant family his plans to quit a comfortable, full-time job to start his own business. "[My mom] grew up with a mentality that your identity is closely tied to your work. And if you don't have a full-time job, you risk everything. You risk your stability, your family, and your future," he tells us. We hear from Marlene Orozco, Associate Director of the Stanford Latino Entrepreneur Initiative at the Stanford School of Business, about the challenges and opportunities entrepreneurs face, and how their families can best support them.
  • From Other Folks: Hear from our founder and CEO Juleyka Lantigua on the this episode of NPR's Life Kit“Exposure isn't enough. Here's how to make sure you're paid for your time and work." A candid talk on advocating for yourself and your paycheck, the value of betting on yourself and standing up to the "brown discount."
  • From Other Folks: The Juggernaut Interviews features stories of South Asian founders and start-ups. Each week for seven weeks, Snigdha Sur, founder of The Juggernaut, interviews South Asian entrepreneurs about the startups they’ve created and the cultural legacies they’re building along the way. Listen to the trailer and the first episode featuring founder and CEO of Hooked, Prerna Gupta.

Overheard on Spaces

This week on Twitter Spaces we welcomed Ronald Young Jr., host of Solvable and owner of ohitsBigRon studios, which produces Time Well Spent and movie review podcast Leaving the Theatre, for a discussion on keeping a single-topic podcast fresh and engaging. Some takeaways are:

  • Cultivate a strong connection between the host and your audience by evoking feelings and emotions. When producing Leaving the Theatre, Ron likes to take down notes in order to capture how he feels at a specific moment in the movie and preserve his inspiration.
  • Captivate your audience by creating a mental picture, either through sound, music or storytelling techniques. Use clear and descriptive words to describe a feeling, place and moment in time.
  • Draw connections between your listeners and the content you're creating. Make sure to survey your audience at least once a year to get to know them better.
  • Preparation and planning is key. Take steps in the pre-production process that will save you time when editing and in post-production.
