Dear <<First Name>>,
View from the Study
‘January is the month for dreaming.’
January at Belhaven has been full of energy and positivity as we start to turn dreams and ambitions into reality.
Assemblies with the children have focused upon new beginnings and the importance of setting achievable goals from the outset; the importance of reading and forming good habits for life. Most recently, we enjoyed the wonderful tale of the ‘Wild Haggis’ and the message that one good turn deserves another.
As we open up our school facilities to the Dunbar community, with the Choral society returning to the music school and Dunbar FC’s youth sessions starting to use the Sports Hall on a Saturday morning, so we hope that a positive start to strengthening community ties will brighten the gloom of the dark January days as much as the children’s energy and optimism does for us all at Belhaven.
Enjoy the first Eagle’s Eye of 2022 and have a great weekend out!

Mr. Campbell addressing the haggis! |
|
Burns Lunch |
Celebrating Scotland's Bard |
We were very fortunate to be able to call on Alex Campbell to address the haggis on Tuesday 25th.
Following Mr. Townshend’s wonderful assembly and the story of Tavish the Wild Haggis’ meeting with the nation’s favourite poet, we were ready to have to work hard for our lunch, but the caterers made it all incredibly easy and Mr. Campbell delivered the coup de grace in some style!
As the Centenary of the school approaches, we are looking to plan major reunions – St. Andrews Day, Burns’ Night and, of course, the Centenary Ball which is now set to take place on Saturday 27th May 2023! |

Meet Nicola & Tricia, our Two New Secretaries |
We are incredibly fortunate to have recruited not just one but TWO outstanding new secretaries! Nicola Brunton and Tricia Mulroy are now up and running in the school office and I include a brief bio of each below – they are looking forward to meeting you all in due course.
Nicola started at Belhaven in November 2021 having previously worked in childcare. She lives in Dunbar and enjoys her cycle to work, although less so at the moment than she will come summer! When not at Belhaven you will probably find Nicola outdoors trying to burn off her three children's excess energy or, if time permits (and if she has the energy herself), pounding the pavements, as she is a keen runner.
Tricia joined Belhaven Hill at the end of 2021 after spells in the Police, NHS and Education Sector. Tricia has lived in East Lothian most of her life and has 2 grown up children and a teenager as well as two dogs and a husband at home in Dunbar. She can often be found cheering at the side lines of her teenage son’s rugby matches or as a groupie to his Pipe Band! Tricia has a passion for baking and loves a good excuse to bake all sorts of goodies.
Nicola works in the morning (8am - 1.30pm) and hands over to Tricia at 1pm for the afternoons (1 - 6pm). Please send any enquiries that you might have about the school to secretary@belhavenhill.com - both Nicola and Tricia monitor this mailbox. |

Lots of Sports |
|
The netball and hockey teams have made a fantastic start to the term and you can read the match reports of multiple victories and exciting encounters here.
We continue to offer as wide a range of sports as possible; Rugby 7s, indoor cricket and mixed football continue throughout the winter months.
If you are in Form 5 or 6 and would like to continue to improve your rugby, please consider getting in touch with North Berwick, Haddington or Dunbar’s Mini Rugby organisers. Marc Teague at North Berwick coaches some current Belhavians and would love to see some more! A useful page listing all kinds of sporting opportunities can be found here.
It has been a great pleasure to welcome Dunbar FC’s P1 group to Belhaven on Saturday mornings and we look forward to developing this partnership in the future. |

A Flying Start to 2022 for Form 6 |
Learning about David Brewster, Scottish inventor of the kaleidoscope |
Since finishing their animation in DT, the children have been inspired by one of the Scottish inventors in their film – David Brewster, the inventor of kaleidoscopes.
They are now making their own using cardboard tubes, reflective card and coloured cellophane chocolate wrappers. It has been quite fiddly and they had to use their knowledge of measuring with rulers and multiplying by 3 or 4 to find the right place to mark their mirror sections but the results are fantastic. |

Hatches and Matches! |
|
We were delighted to be able to host Miss Kidd’s wedding ceremony in the Front Hall at Belhaven on Saturday 18th December. Alice and MJ were piped away by George C and James T. Miss Kidd is now Mrs. Johnstone and we wish both her and MJ a lifetime of happiness together.
Further exciting news followed shortly afterwards as George Barrett let us know that Cornelia had given birth to wee Douglas – born at 8pm on Sunday 19th (just in time for Quiet Reading). Douglas and Cornelia are both doing well, and George reports that it’s all been pretty easy so far! |

Plans for COPPS1 and 'Tree per Child' |
|
Plans continue to take shape for COPPS1 on Thursday 17th March. We now have four schools confirmed – Belhaven, Strathallan, St. Mary’s, Melrose and Ardvreck – and our team is making excellent progress with their presentation.
On the day, we will launch our ‘Tree per Child’ scheme. The plan is for every Belhavian to be provided with a sapling when they join the school and for us to grow that sapling within the grounds during their time with us. When they come to leave, we will plant their tree somewhere of their choosing.
We are in the process of developing our Sustainability Policy and if you have ideas that you would like us to consider, parents and children can get in touch with Mr. Purkiss, jpurkiss@belhavenhill.com. |
