The Institute for Nonprofit Practice
We are pleased to share some exciting news. The Institute for Nonprofit Practices (INP) will be bringing its programming to Western New York, targeting a launch in the fall of 2022. INP is a Boston-based initiative best known for its Core Certificate Program to develop leaders in the nonprofit sector.
The Certificate Program offers:
- 40 hours of instruction on essential management and leadership topics
- Small group problem-solving sessions
- One-on-one mentoring
Program graduates join an active alumni network, 3,000 strong. The network offers continuing education workshops, mentoring opportunities, networking events, a job board posting site for nonprofits, and pro-bono career counseling and organizational support. Additional programming includes a Community Fellows program that picks up where the Certificate Program ends. The Fellows Program provides continued support for transformational leaders in the community.
The Tower Foundation has worked with INP since 2009. Over the years, we helped INP expand to all the Massachusetts counties where we make grants (Essex, Barnstable, Dukes, and Nantucket). Leaders from many of our past and current grant partners are graduates of the Core Certificate Program and we have heard from many of them that it had a profoundly positive impact on their careers.
The Tower Foundation is joined by Key Bank and the John R. Oishei Foundation as initial supporters of INP’s Western New York launch.
Learn more about INP’s mission and programs at a virtual launch event on Thursday, February 24, 2022, 8:30-9:30 a.m. To register for this event, click the button below.

Think Bigger Do Good Policy Paper Series
Last year we told you about the Think Bigger Do Good Policy Paper Series, a collaborative project of the Thomas Scattergood Foundation, Peg’s Foundation, the Peter & Elizabeth Tower Foundation, and the Patrick P. Lee Foundation. A new paper was just released in December 2021: How Communities Must Use 988 to Improve Care and Correct Crisis System Disparities. The paper makes recommendations for communities working to implement the 988 crisis hotline, which goes live in July 2022.
The paper is available free to the public.

DIVERSITY, EQUITY and INCLUSION
|
|
|
In this space, we will share what we learn, what inspires us, and - in the spirit of transparency - what new actions we take in pursuit of a more equitable approach to our role as grantmaker both internally and externally.
What we are reading:
Highly recommend this listen from This American Life featuring some personal stories about the backlash from the 2020 racial reckoning: “Talking While Black.”
What we are doing:
We are in the middle of a grant review; reading through the proposals that were submitted in our February deadline for Strengthening Partner Capacity grants. We are so thankful to those of you who spent time sharing your organization’s diversity data and telling us about where YOU are in your organizational DEI journeys. This information is so helpful for us and is changing the way that we think about our decisions.
