Hey y’all!

Here’s what I put out on the blog this week:

  1. No Man’s Land – The tension I live in daily.
  2. Advice You Will Ignore – A list of 22 self-care tips actually worth the time to read them, and that you will likely ignore.
  3. The Decision – I don’t really drink anymore. This is why.
  4. The Things That Stay – People leave marks when they leave.
  5. My Favorite Picture – My wife is scary when motivated.
  6. Breaking Slowly – The systems that hold everything together are breaking – but slowly.

Monthly review:

On the blog this month to date, I have published 20,769 words, and each post averaged 903 words, for 23 posts so far (Remember, I don’t publish on Sundays, and I haven’t published today yet).

My three most popular posts so far this month were, in order, Advice You Will Ignore, The Pie That Isn’t There, and The Decision. Most of my readers were from the US, but Ireland and France come in second and third.

Other Stuff

I hate how alarm clocks just jar you awake – I always wake up in a sort of mild panic. It’s like we arrange in advance for someone to scream at us until we wake up from peaceful slumber. So, I was excited to learn this week that on my android phone, I could set the alarm to gradually increase in volume. (I followed these instructions)

This morning, I gradually woke up, in a space of curiosity about the noise rather than an adrenaline rush. It was delightful. (I am told iPhones have similar options, but you are on your own there.)

I’m still doing my daily pages (I’m using these notebooks and this pen, if you are a fellow nerd about such things) and there is something to writing longhand, especially after having not done so in any significant way in 20 years. These two reporters for the New York Times praise the virtues of longhand writing, and even do their first drafts in script.

Since March of last year, I’ve lost about 50 pounds (I talk about how, here) and one side effect of that is that my wedding ring no longer fits. I’m not clear if I’m still losing weight, so I bought a silicone one on Amazon. I’ve seen these in woodworking groups, where people who use lathes wear them to avoid having their metal rings caught on equipment. For $7 for a four pack, I figured it was worth the try.

I’ve been wearing it for two days now, and I literally don’t notice it’s there. I was afraid it would make my finger sweat, but it’s just like wearing any other ring.

Thank you for reading. This newsletter is a reader-supported publication. The best way to support my work is to become a patron, buy me a cup of coffee, or forward this letter to someone else. And if someone did forward this to you, you can get your own subscription here.

Take care,

Hugh
