Big Plans in'22 . . .

STUART'S MESSAGE

In 2020 we took our first baby steps, while simultaneously, dealing with the realities of a pandemic.

In 2021, still blanketed by the black cloud of Covid, we continued to expand our base, conducting webinars, hosting vineyard tours, and rounding out the year with, what members described as: “first-class events”. In October, we celebrated harvest with an outstanding Harvest Dinner at Tamarack Junction and held our first Annual Membership Meeting at the Blackrock Wine Company in November. To close out the year, we gathered at the Washoe Public House in Reno for a warm and joyous Holiday Party.

Now it’s 2022 . . . and we have high expectations for you! Even Chuck Yeager would be impressed.

First, we’re allocating $5,300 (30%) of our financial resources towards Education and $4,500 to Outreach/PR in 2022. Combined ($9,800) is double our entire budget in 2021.
  • For Members-Only, quarterly Dual-Track Grape Growing & Winemaking Roundtables will address a list of TO-DO’s that members should be working on in each quarter
  • TMCC reached out to NGGW and asked us to offer a beginner’s course on Grape Growing in Nevada over summer in ’22. We’ve expanded the offering to include Winemaking 101. Kathie Russell graciously stepped up to lead the grape growing course and Greg Ross will lead the winemaking course
  • Throughout the year we’ll be hosting “Feedback Friday’s” where small groups of members will meet and compare their wines to commercially available wine.
  • From April/May through August, members will start hosting vineyard tours again, and we’ll also provide the well-received bottled wine and fermenting juice evaluation events
  • NGGW, UNR and DFI are fully committed to conducting varietal research and we’ll also work closely together to offer other resources to grape growers and winemakers in Nevada
  • And Education is not just for members; we’re launching an aggressive Outreach/PR program to start educating the general public about Nevada’s grape and wine industry
Ambitious? Yes! Yet clearly, everything is necessary, and required, essential, and a start.

How can “we” accomplish it all? In five words: "many hands make light work".

When YOU see (and personally benefit from) the fruits of our labor, EVERYONE WINS. In return, I’m NOT asking YOU to do ALL the jobs. You’ll be pleased to know that I’m restricting YOU to ONE. But don’t procrastinate. Please step up and take ONE job.

Back to Chuck Yeager. Collectively, when we work together, we have “The Right Stuff” within our Association to make it happen. Together, let’s “cause it to happen”.

2022 REVENUE OBJECTIVES

To accomplish the Education, Outreach/PR and other objectives (listed above), we need money. We’ve set quantifiable goals for revenue that YOU can help with, such as:
  1. Help Adrain increase the number of Full ($100) Members from 39 > 60. That’s $6,000
  2. Help Adrian increase the number of Associate Members ($50) from 8 > 18. That’s $3,600.
  3. Help support the NGGW/UNR/DFI partnership – we’re budgeting for UNR to contribute $10,000 in ‘22
  4. Help Dan Shore find Bronze/Silver & Gold Sponsors to contribute a total of $2,500
  5. Help us find 5 sponsors for the 5 vineyard tours @ $100 each ($500 in total)
- Vice President, Adrian Dyette, is our Membership Chair. Please offer to help him with our membership goals.
- Dan Shore has stepped up to serve as our Fundraising Chair. Please step up and offer to help Dan.

NGGW 2022 Budget

We have an aggressive year planned, but it all depends upon having the funds to execute it.  We are not planning to spend the entirety of our contribution from UNR immediately, so we are going to need your help; pay your dues, help Adrian bring in new members and Dan find more sponsors, and help out in other areas such as event planning, education, and committees.

2022 PROJECTED REVENUE -$19,500
2022 PROJECTED EXPENSES -  $17,365

NEW! For Members in'22 . . .

NGGW Introduces:
FEEDBACK FRIDAYS

NGGW is introducing Feedback Fridays, where one Friday a month 5 members will be able to bring a bottle of their own wine and also must bring a bottle of the same commercial varietal they they aspire to be like. Greg Ross will lead this peer evaluation of member's wine, allowing all members in attendance to evaluate and comment on each of the 10 wines.  This will be a great opportunity to receive comments and suggestions.  BUT, you must be willing to put on your learning cap and leave the ego cap at home.  There is no better way to learn!  All full members are welcome to attend the evaluation.

The first Feedback Friday will be March 4th - 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at 4th Street Wineries and to start things off, the first 5 members that RSVP will kick off the first Feedback event. juice@nggw.org

PROFESSIONAL WINE EVALUATION
(NEW  WINE)

On March 23th  from 5 – 7 PM NGGW will offer the first of three yearly professional evaluations of member's wines (in spring - new wine, in summer - bottled wine, in fall - newly fermented wine) at the  4th Street Wineries.  Adam Hand (Founder of Great Basin Winery) has graciously offered to host this evaluation and along with guest TBD winemaker will evaluate your new wine to give you early insight into how you may improve them before bottling.  Contact us and let us know you’d like to submit 1 or 2 wines.
  1. Download the submission form from the NGGW website
  2. Complete the form for each wine before you arrive at 4th St Wineries (415 E 4th St, Reno, NV)
  3. Bring your new wines in small containers
  4. Evaluations start at 5 PM (snacks provided)
Members are limited to two (2) wines at this time. We are planning on 12 winemakers submitting 2 wines each (24 in total). If there’s an opportunity for you to bring 3 (or even 4) wines, we’ll let you know prior to the date.
For Prospective New Members & the Community . . .

CLASSES AT TMCC

TMCC reached out to us in December looking for somebody to teach a grape growing class for beginners and after a couple of weeks discussing it we decided to teach not only a grape growing class, but also a wine making class.  Our focus will be to provide the novice with the skills to get started and overcome the fear of failure.  Kathie Russell of Palomino Vines will lead Grape Growing and Greg Ross will lead Wine Making.  Kathie's classes are three Saturday sessions starting in May, and Greg will follow with 3 wine making sessions just before the harvest season.  As part of TMCC's Community Education Program, they will charge a small fee and it will be open to the community and to all NGGW members.  We believe this would be the perfect opportunity for our associate members to dive a little deeper in the hobby.
Vineyard Tours Expanded to 5 in 2022 . . .
