February, 2022

Let it snow!

Yeah, sometimes we just have to! Given the forecast for this week, we wanted to remind folks about how to track any changes in Library hours due to weather. If we have a delayed opening, early closing or a full snow day, that information will be posted on our website milanlibrary.org and our Facebook page. If we are open, we will *always* answer the phone (734-439-1240), so that’s another way to verify in case you are wondering if the weather has affected our hours! Meanwhile, stay safe and warm!

Blind Date with a Book!

It’s February and we’re getting ready to match you up with the book of your dreams! Well, we hope that’s what happens! Stop by the library between Feb 4- 28 and pick one of our blind date book candidates — we’ll give you a hint about what type of book it is, so if you’re not into certain genres, you can find a good match for your interests.

Staff Picks

We love to share what we’ve been reading/watching/listening to/exploring! Here are Sarah’s recommendations! (Note: Click on the title to get to our catalog record for the item.)

In honor of our young new year, I have two books with younger heroines. Both twists on the classics. — Sarah

The Beekeeper's Apprentice: On the Segregation of the Queen by Laurie R. King

This was a fun read and anyone who enjoys twists on the classics will likely enjoy King's Mary Russell novels. (And we have a number of them here at the library!) Her first book has young Mary Russell literally running into the retired Sherlock Holmes. Holmes takes her under his wing and the two begin sleuthing together. It’s definitely a lighter version of Holmes, but I love seeing how authors reimagine iconic characters.

Northanger Abbey by Val McDermid

The original by Jane Austen is one of my favorites of Austen's novels. When I discovered this retelling, I had to read it! I thought that McDermid did a fantastic job capturing Cat's innocence and naiveté. If you haven't read the original, it's the coming-of-age story of Catherine Morland, who reads too many novels for her own good. It's a sweet story of love, but also of growing in humility and of encountering the bitter parts of our world but choosing for goodness none the less. I plan on reading it again!
