You know the feeling….you worked on a painting for hours, even days, and now you look at it and it is trash. What do you do?

How do you salvage this painting you have spent so much time on? Do you throw it in the trash and start over but the thought of this makes you sick because of all the time you spent?

To get this painting out of the “teenage” stage …

What questions do you ask yourself?

What steps do you take?

What part of the painting do you look at first for the answers?

These are the things we will cover during this short but wonderful hour. We will also talk about artistic confidence and how to get it and keep it.

I am excited to be with you and I hope you will join me…I can’t wait to meet you!

Gwen Fox is a renowned international professional Artist and Art Coach who empowers artists to recognize their unique artistic style, establish a marketing strategy, develop a strong success mindset while creating a life they love.

Gwen does this by relating her own personal story of self-discovery, helping Artists discard the limiting beliefs placed by outside influences. This allows each Artist to reach the core essence of their unlimited creativity.

Gwen’s work was selected to show with His Royal Highness Prince Phillip in the famous Fermoy Art Gallery Kings Lynn England.

She has shown in the Catherine Lorillard Wolf Art Club in New York, had one woman shows in Hawaii England, Washington D.C., Taos, NM, Charleston, S.C. and Florida.

The National Security Agency commissioned Gwen to do two large paintings for their office in Fort Meade, Maryland. Her work is in many corporate and private collections.

As a child, Gwen was allowed to express her creative vision while drawing and painting on the white wallpaper canvas at her family’s eastern Tennessee farmhouse. For years, her mother repapered the hallway – often weekly – to give her daughter space to display her gift, later regretting the loss of those early works.

Gwen lives in a 100-year-old adobe home in Taos, New Mexico with two fabulous German Shepherds and one wonderful rescue from Costa Rica.

Dianne Mize - Light and Shadow

Dianne Mize,
Artist, Teacher of Art,
and a Native of Rural Georgia

My home since the mid-70s is the northeast Georgia mountains where I live in a small cabin with my two cats, Lizzy and Charley.  The most significant and fulfilling part of my life was the nearly thirty years with my life partner and soul mate, Dr. Howard Hanson, whose death in early 2010  put me on a journey towards a new normal, a process on-going.

I don't remember not loving immersing myself in art whether drawing, painting, sculpting or printmaking. Neither do I remember not loving music: playing guitar, mandolin, my beloved hammered dulcimer or listening to others play.  I suppose my favorite composer is Chopin, although I do love Mozart, especially when he's being naughty, and Beethoven, Bach, Haydn, Debussy and Saint-Saëns.  And I still enjoy listening to the Mamas and Papas, The Bee Gees, early Joan Baez, James Taylor, Carol King and Peter Paul and Mary.

Artists I admire most are Richard Schmid, Nita Engle, Charles Reid, Michael Parkes, Robert Genn and oh yes, Rembrandt, Michelangelo, Claude Monet and Andrew Wyeth. I don't care for trendy stuff or for most of what the modern culture raves about. Rather I prefer artists who ignore the current trends and follow their own inner directions, regardless of genre or time period.

I have no patience with those who neglect honing their skills and craftsmanship, who fail to question the mainstream's direction, or whose motive is fitting-in or chasing a profit rather than expressing their own inner voice.  I'm a rebel by nature, always have been.

If I have an artist's statement (a tag our mainstream culture has deemed crucial to being professional), it is that we are each born unique and that uniqueness is what gives us individuality, that if we exchange that uniqueness for a mask of any kind, we will not fully realize our purpose on this earth, we will never become whole.

In February, 2015, I partnered with SauteeLive to produce instructional videos unlike any being offered today.  Each lesson focuses on how to use a composing principle as a tool rather than following it as a rule.  Later, we expanded this idea to holding monthly live online workshops, then offering these as self-pacing courses. My passion is to spread the word to emerging artists that their creativity is limited only by the limits they, themselves, place on it.  Learning to use composing principles as tools can open up infinite creative potential.

As to my work, I love to paint, I love drawing and I love teaching.  That's it. I'm quite happy painting things in nature, most especially the abundance of life I find in these north Georgia mountains where my soul finds itself at home.

Outreach ~ Delivery of 2021 Donations

On February 8, 2002, Carolyn Cunningham and I delivered our Outreach funds to Sean McCartney, Chief Executive Officer and Vanessa, his assistant, for the Boys and Girls Club Western Slope of El Dorado County located in Placerville. We proudly handed them a check for $380. They provide food, tutoring, group activities and most important, art classes for the kids 5 – 18 years of age. Carolyn and I were amazed at the love and care the staff has for these kids.

We also met with Shannon Daniel, Superintendent of the Gold Oak Union School District located in Placerville. We gave Shannon a check for $500 to be divided between Gold Oak Elementary School and Pleasant Valley Middle School for art supplies. The surprise and excitement her staff showed was heartwarming.

Both of our recipients this year are more than happy to attend our May General Meeting to share with us how the funds were spent ~ be it through Zoom or in person. I know I share with you all the good feelings we have in raising these funds to benefit our younger generation.

The Candy Store
Funk, Nut, and Other Art with a Kick
January 30, 2022 — May 01, 2022
Crocker Art Museum, Sacramento

In 1962, Adeliza McHugh opened The Candy Store Gallery in a modest house in Folsom, California. The business did, in fact, begin as a candy store, but when that closed, McHugh converted it into an art gallery. There were just two rooms for the ceramics, paintings, and other art she displayed, though these small spaces featured makers who would become nationally and even internationally significant. Many of these artists—including Robert Arneson, Roy De Forest, David Gilhooly, Irving Marcus, Gladys Nilsson, Jim Nutt, Jack Ogden, Sandra Shannonhouse, Peter VandenBerge, and Maija Peeples-Bright (née Zack) — either taught or were students at the University of California, Davis, or Sacramento State College (now California State University, Sacramento). Their work, along with that of many other artists, delighted visitors to the gallery for 30 years and helped put the whimsical, funky, and irreverent aesthetic of California’s Central Valley on the art-historical map. Held on the occasion of what would be the 60th anniversary of the gallery’s founding — and in conjunction with a related show at the Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Museum at UC Davis — this exhibition is the largest to date on the Candy Store and, as the trailblazing McHugh liked to say, celebrates art with a “kick."

Modern Mosaic takes that a bit further and includes all types of medium (metal, wood, glass, cork, beads, paper, etc.) used in a traditional way to create an image. Both 2-dimentional and 3-dimensional art will be accepted.

CALL TO ARTISTS

Support the Ladies Valley LANDBACK project

RETURNING NATIVE LANDS TO NATIVE HANDS

American River Conservancy (ARC) and Cosumnes Culture and Waterways, (CCAWW) cordially invite artists to submit their work for auction at the fundraiser to support the Ladies Valley LANDBACK project.

Fundraiser: Oct 22, 2022 at Wakamatsu Farm, 941 Cold Springs Rd, Placerville, CA • Art will be accepted on Sept 1,  2022 from noon till 5:00pm at ARC Nature Center, Marshall Gold Discovery Park, Coloma, CA or by appointment, contact: Melissa@arconservancy.org

ARC plans to transfer title of the 320-acre property currently known as Ladies Valley, to CCAWW. By making this land transfer ARC is participating in one of many LANDBACK projects in the United States and Canada which have proven an effective way to support the resurgence of Native American cultures. To continue the conservation and manage the stewardship of this land we plan to raise a minimum of $25,000.

Cosumne is a Miwok word: coso meaning salmon and umne meaning people, hence the salmon people river, named for the native salmon which still swim in the river today. The Ladies Valley site was originally known as “Coso village” inhabited by the Miwok people for thousands of years. This LANDBACK gift to the indigenous Miwok people will kick-off the next steps in creating a living culture site, where local tribes will be invited to bring their families to build traditional bark houses, known as umachas, to gather and propagate plants for food, medicine, and craft. CCAWW hosts Work-n-Play Days the second Sunday of each month for all people to join CCAWW to touch the earth and care for the land. This land will serve as a place to experience the living culture of the Tume’lay Nisenan Miwok, aka Northern Sierra Miwok.

The Ladies Valley Fundraiser seeks the following forms of art for the fundraising auction: paintings, encaustics, watercolors, mixed media, works on paper, all forms of prints, mosaics, sculptures, ceramics, fiber arts, rubbings and jewelry. Art may be no larger than 4 ft by 4 ft and weigh no more than 50 pounds.

TO REGISTER FOR SUBMITTING ARTWORK go to https://app.donorview.com/xEvEV

TO REGISTER FOR THE FUNDRAISER EVENT go to https://app.donorview.com/X416J

There will be regular PAINT OUTs for Plein Air artists hosted by CCAWW at Ladies Valley & ARC at Wakamatsu farm. CCAWW meets on the 2nd Sunday of the month, weather permitting, at 10:00am in Diamond Springs and then a short drive out to the land. Please confirm participation with Kimberly ShiningStar Petree at (530) 363-4816 cell or waterlover4life@yahoo.com
