Dear friends of PIRS,

Greetings!
It is such a pleasure to present the first PIRS E-Newsletter to you and to all our friends and supporters.  As we enter our 37th year of delivering quality programs for immigrant women and their young children, we are excited to now be able to reach a broader audience through online media.
We are delighted to share with you some highlights of our recent initiatives: the official launch of PIRS Website; news from our recent Annual General Meeting; and our upcoming Women's Development Programs, LEAD and Building Bridges for Winter 2012.

PIRS Website Launch
PIRS launched its new site on November 22, 2011! Visit us at www.pirs.ca.  There you will find comprehensive information about our programs and services, engaging information about upcoming events, and ways and ideas on how to continue supporting PIRS.  We want to thank the PIRS staff, Board and Committee Members whose valuable contributions brought this project to fruition.

We are grateful to have such a supportive community where we can always work together in serving our most needed programs in the community, helping our multi-barriers clients stand strong.

Our office will be closed the week of December 25 and reopen on January 3, 2012.
In case of emergency, please leave a message on our answering machine at 604-298-5888. We will be monitoring it regularly.

PIRS Board and Staff wish all PIRS members and supporters a very peaceful and productive 2012. All the best to you and yours!

New Space, Familiar Faces: PIRS 2011 Annual General Meeting & Super Volunteer Judita Scott

The 2011 Annual General Meeting was held on November 23, at the YWCA in downtown Vancouver.  Over 65 members and supporters came down on a chilly evening for the warmth of friendly conversation and the business of launching another year - the 37th for our organization.  Judita Scott was honoured with the Mary Affleck Award,  as our 2011 Volunteer Service Award recipient.  Judita is a wonderful volunteer and a valued member of the Marpole team. Her enthusiasm for teaching and learning contributes so much to the team and PIRS participants. We thank Judita for her service and commitment.

Women's Development Program

PIRS believes in immigrant women and their capacity to fill diverse leadership roles in our community.  Helping to foster and promote these leadership roles is what our Women`s Development Programs are all about. In the LEAD Program, women are encouraged to network, explore, learn and share knowledge about life in Canada. BUILDING BRIDGES takes this process one-step further. Graduates of the LEAD program, as well as women from the community with high intermediate English skills gather as a group to develop their leadership skills and host a variety of guest speakers on topics related to community development and community participation.

Our next LEAD session begins January 10th and BUILDING BRIDGES starts February 13, 2012.  If you, or anyone you know, want to know more about either program, please call 604-298-5888 or email programs@pirs.bc.ca to be invited to an information session. More...
