From Our CEO

Dear All,

Our ECG President, Frank Windeyer, joins with me in wishing you a happy, healthy, safe and prosperous 2022 to you all. We look forward to welcoming all of our current and new volunteers who will join us in the garden from Monday 10 January 2022.

I hope everyone had a relaxing and peaceful break.

Celebration

It was good to see so many volunteers at our end of year event at Cheltenham Recreational Club on Friday 3 December. I enjoyed the bowls lesson with Kevin and meeting and speaking with many of you. 🏆

Farewell

During 2021 we sadly said goodbye to some of our volunteers and we wish them well in their new adventures; for some a move overseas or interstate and for others a change of pace. Please know that wherever you go, we will always be delighted to hear from you and rejoin our team anytime.

I wish to say that our special thoughts are with our volunteers and clients who are ill or healing from injuries at this time.

Moving Location

Coralie Jensen has a new location in Eastwood on Tuesdays and from Tuesday 18 January 2022, Coralie will be moving into the CCA New South Wales office located at 12 Lakeside Rd, Eastwood NSW 2122 🏡

Coralie will be available to meet with all volunteers on Tuesdays at the new Eastwood location. 2 hour parking can be found on the street.

Our Tools of the Trade

A lovely surprise from the Fiskars Group 🪚⚙️🎉🙏 On Tuesday 21 December, Fiskars delivered a gift of tools to Easy Care Gardening. As soon as they arrived I phoned the Fiskars Head Office and thanked them very much. Thank you to Meredith Kirton for contacting Fiskars group to notify them of our need. On behalf of the whole team we wish to say a big thank you to the Fiskars Group.

Bunnings- Fun Days

On a stormy and rainy night on Thursday 9 December, two Bunnings stores invited us to their Family Fun Night. Meredith served at the stall at Belrose (see her pictured with Santa) raffling off a hamper donated by Seasol, and I was at Thornleigh selling terrariums and poinsettias (see the picture below).  Also, a HUGE thanks to Bunnings in Gordon for their donations to our tool drive. 🎅🏻🎁

📻 Interview on Northside Community Radio 99.3

Thank you to Northside Radio, a NFP local radio station, for interviewing me on the breakfast program in 24 December. It was a great opportunity to thank our volunteers and donors in 2021 and call out for new volunteers.

In 2022 the COVID rules continue to apply.

📅 Advanced notice, as a My Aged Care provider, Easy Care Gardening is required to provide the booster shot details of all workers- paid and volunteers.

In late January 2022, we will again be calling out for you to send in your records of your boosters. I thank you in advance for sending these in.

💉💉 A reminder:  For all volunteers returning to the garden or new volunteers starting with us, it is a condition to be double dosed with your COVID-19 vaccination before volunteering with us.

COVID-19 Symptoms and Testing

🦠If you’re experiencing any COVID symptoms, if you have been a close or casual contact of anyone with COVID-19, we would encourage you to please stand down, get a test and return when you get a negative result or have no symptoms, typically 7-14 days from exposure.

As a My Aged Care provider, we have mandatory reporting of all positive cases of COVID-19 to the department of health. If you have a positive result, please report this result to your coordinator, or to our office e. info@easycaregardening.org.au

Mask Wearing

😷 Mask wearing has returned to the outdoor construction and maintenance industry- which is us.  This means whenever you visit our office, or when we have any interaction with our clients, share vehicles, or during breaks in our teams, we need to wear a mask.  This includes mask wearing in the rare occasion when we we need to enter a client’s home e.g. using an amenity.

However, mask wearing exemptions do apply and include:

  • If a person has a medical exemption from wearing the mask
  • It is unsafe to continue to work if wearing a mask e.g. climatic heat changes or visual obstruction due to fogging safety glasses.
  • When speaking with a client who has a hearing loss or who is deaf- as this person needs lip reading cues to communicate effectively.
  • If you are concerned about communicating with a mask for people living with a hearing loss, I will be conducting a special session in early 2022 on communicating with person living with a hearing loss and people with dual sensory impairments (vision and hearing), but in the interim please write down your instructions, speak slightly slower and clearly and if you need to please repeat your communication until it is understood.

Morning and Afternoon Teas- holding pattern

Due to the high numbers and rapid spread of the current COVID-19 variants, all morning and afternoon teas are to be paused again until further notice.  All staff and volunteers need to own drinks and food.

🍏🫖🥤 I would encourage our volunteers and staff to have regular breaks, especially during summer, but not to gather and please socially distance or take staggered breaks wherever possible.

Thank you for your understanding and patience at this time.

When it is safe to do so, I look forward to getting out to the gardens and meeting more volunteers,  and I wish you all a safe, happy and healthy 2022.

Leanne Babic, CEO

Where’s Coralie?

For over 10 years the City of Ryde has provided Easy Care Gardening with office space  every Tuesday at The  Eastwood Meeting Room in Shaftsbury Road, Eastwood. The use of this space has been of wonderful assistance to Easy Care Gardening, especially for volunteers who live on the LGA s of Hunter’s Hill and Ryde. Countless numbers of volunteers and potential volunteers have met Coralie at the Meeting Room for training, orientation,  police check renewals etc.

However, as of 22nd December 2021, Coralie has left the building!

CCA has kindly made a space available so that Easy Care Gardening can continue to have a presence at a location convenient to residents of the Ryde and Hunters Hill LGAs. You can now find Easy Care Gardening on Tuesdays only at:

CCA, 12 Lakeside Road ,Eastwood

  • Coralie is only at CCA on Tuesdays
  • By appointment only
  • Free parking available in  Glenn Street Carpark or Hillview Lane Car Park. Street Parking is limited.
End of Year Party Wrap
It was wonderful to be able to see each other before Christmas and even play some barefoot bowls!  How lucky it seems now that we had that window to safely reflect on the year that was, toast our volunteers and their sensational efforts, and safely mingle with each other over a meal. Thanks to all that could join us, and salute to those who could not be there this time.
Congrats to all the organiser - to Coralie for the event and decorations, to many of the staff and Hardie Grant Books for the wonderful raffle prizes, and to the coordinators for your enthusiasm right till the end as all was packed away.

We are truly blessed!
St James Turramurra have been volunteering as a church group for the charity Easy Care Gardening Inc for over ten years. Together they have contributed over 2579 hours of service, weeding, raking, pruning and mulching, helping elders in their neighbourhood stay living at home independently and safely by having a well maintained garden.

Congregation member Angus Sturrock is currently leading the ECG programme.  He said “The youth of St James initiated what we call Love Teams some 10 or so years back providing practical help and love to various parts of the community and parish. One of the love teams was teamed with Easy Care Gardening. I was inspired by the example of our youth and was keen to set up a love team that people from our family service could be a part. I kicked that off about 3 years ago. Our team is largely members of our Bible Study group (with our kids) and I really enjoy the sense of community as we serve together."  He outlines his experience by explaining “I feel like our efforts are small but provide a really practical way of helping and connecting with people in our local community that are in need. We are so grateful for the excellent work that Easy Care Gardening does in caring for vulnerable members of our community, and have found the partnership to be really beneficial as we look to do the same.”

You can read more about St James' work with ECG in the upcoming issue of Southern Cross Magazine.
How can you or your church get involved?

If you are near one of the four LGA’s ECG operates in they’d love to hear from you.  Gauge interest in your congregation or service organisation like Rotary or Lions Club and see if you can nominate a team leader and get them to contact volunteering@easycaregardening.org.au The leader will have to go through an induction process and get a police check, then ECG can equip and train the group with anything else they need. To find out more, contact Coralie our Volunteer Manager, who can walk you through what’s involved.
Tools of the Trade
We are so thrilled to receive some brilliant tools gifted to us by Fiskars. It really was like “Christmas come early” for our team, and our CEO Leanne Babic has personally thanked FISKARS, but everyone is thrilled!  Pictured is coordinator Jennifer with a few of the pieces of equipment.  “It will make such a difference to have such great new tools in the vehicles, and the volunteers will be over the moon too”, said Larissa Hansen, ECG Coordinator.
Also, a big thank you to Gordon Bunnings (who know us well as we are always up there for something!) for the  5 x 42 L trugs, 5 x 16 L trugs, 6 pruners + bypass and 1 Ryobi hedge trimmer kit ( with battery and charger).

One thing that we hear from our volunteers is that they need some new tools.  ECG is trying to fix this by:
  1. Having a fundraiser with GoFundMe.  This is a shareable fundraiser which you can put on your social media platforms like Facebook, or share through your email with friends.  We are 1/3 of the way towards being able to afford a new electric hedger!!
  2. Having a 'donate a tool kit' fundraiser internally, with tool set donations available through the office for $50, $100, $200 and $500.
  3. Investing in tools and organising some donations through Bunnings Warehouse, Fiskars and Seasol.
  4. Applying for grants - and thankfully successfully receiving one from Hunters Hill Council for this exact purpose.
  5. Recycling, repairing and sharpening our existing kit to reuse and repurpose the tools we have.
DO YOU HAVE GOOD QUALITY TOOLS WE CAN UPCYCLE?
We are collecting used and unwanted gardening and other (carpentry etc) tools to be collected and taken to Pymble (by appointment).  We have plans to repair and reuse what we can, and perhaps have a stall at a local market at some stage in 2022 to sell some and raise funds for other tools we are short of.

Optus Magic

Classic summer days lounging around the pool!?! Not for these guys!  They actually resurrected this backyard and unearthed the pool.  We are hugely thankful for the hard work put in by our corporate volunteers, and the huge difference they can make to the lives of others with their impactful day's work in the garden!

Coordinator Larissa Hansen worked with Optus to ensure the day's success back in June of 2021.  "The team were a wonderful bunch of strong, diligent, hard working and enthusiastic men from the NBN team at Optus.  One of the gardens that they came to the rescue with was so overgrown that one could barely see that there was actually a swimming pull amongst the overgrown vegetation, Tradescantia and fallen palm fronds. This is one garden that they will no doubt never forget!"

It certainly was a huge day. Larissa collected 50 bags full of green waste and countless bundles of shrub branches and palm fronds later, not to mention the 3 cubic metres of mulch laid on top of thick cardboard around the pool, the garden was transformed! (Now for the pool cleaner team to follow!) The 2 teams of thirty gentleman found it to be an enormously rewarding experience and they commented that - apart from never working this hard in their lives! The Optus team also enjoyed speaking to our very grateful client Peter and were eager to get a team shot at the end of the productive day."

Corri Byrne, Social Impact Manager, Group Sustainability at Optus remarked "At Optus, we are committed to making a positive difference in the community and we  actively support our people to get involved through community impact days providing up to 5 days of volunteer leave each year. The Easy Care Gardening opportunity was a great way to bring the NSW Field Home Connect team together and offering a real sense of achievement to all involved."

My Patch

Susan Bowers is the recipient of the Brian Self Award and has been volunteering with ECG since 2009. But what does her own patch look like?  This amazing property was the Rectory at Greenwich before being sold by the Anglican Church.  Now it is the much loved home of Sue and her husband Steve.

Sue described her patch to ECG saying "We do not have a very large garden with wide open spaces and big trees however our garden has taken shape and filled out pleasingly over the last 20 years or so and is more than enough for us 😊

We enjoy spending time in the garden and it responds very well to a bit of attention however it is also ‘easycare’ and can generally manage quite happily on its own if left unattended, as happens from time to time!"

So what are her favourite plants and what makes her smile?  Sue reflected, "I really enjoy having a number of orchids and other plants which I have been given by clients and fellow volunteers over the years.  I always think of them when the beautiful floral displays appear. I also love the annual display of crabapple blossom on the tree beside the front path.

Even though the garden is not huge, there are some productive plants too and an organic bent. "We have lemons, limes, cumquats, finger limes and rhubarb in pots, as well as a prolific grapefruit tree which was here when we bought the house." explains Sue, "We have enjoyed honing our composting skills and have a couple of very effective compost bins 😊."

If you would like to share 'Your Patch' with us we would love to see it.  Send your story and images to Meredith.

Fail Safe Recipes

Just before Christmas Meredith Kirton was lucky enough to bump into Angela Low, an retired volunteer from ECG, who had put together a wonderful collection of recipes from clients about 20 years ago.  It included favourites such as the 'Dead Easy Chocolate Cake', a "Delicious Date Loaf', the classic 'Lemonade Scones', 'Mrs' A's Honey Roll' and a 'Southern Sultana Cake'.

With morning and afternoon tea's postponed and modified for much of the last few years, it perhaps is a great time to go through your recipe book and share some of your favourites with everyone, in preparation for when we can again share our breaks together.  What are your tried and true cakes, slices and biscuits that go down a treat with the gardening volunteers?  Let us know your favourite, and who knows, perhaps we can have it baked and photographed for the next newsletter?
