We Are Hiring!

Have you ever been out to the farm or seen Farmshare staff having a blast on social media and thought to yourself, “I would love to work here!”? Well this is your chance!

Farmshare Austin is seeking a temporary, part-time Development and Communications Consultant to bring a strategic focus to development and communications with the goals of widening and deepening our circle of friends who support Farmshare’s mission.

The consultant is responsible for managing events, fundraising and communications for Farmshare Austin, providing overall vision and strategy. The consultant will be working directly with the Executive Director and the Farmshare Board Development & Communications Committee. Approximately 20 hours/week. $25/hour. Work can be done remotely with some time at the farm for photography, videos and interviews.

Another Veggie You-Pick For the Books

Big thanks to everyone who came out to join us for Farmshare’s 8th Annual Veggie You-Pick! Despite the chilly weather and gusty winds, about 400 folks harvested their own veggies while grooving to the bluegrass vibes of the Farmgrass Family Band, helping us raise over $18,000 to support our community food access and beginning farmer education programs!

The 8th Annual Veggie You-Pick was also the largest event we’ve ever hosted! The Farmgrass Family Band jammed out in the fields while El Xolo Tacos food truck offered event-goers warm, delicious tacos. Thanks to the chilly, windy weather, we sold out of our most popular merch - the Farmshare beanie!

A “Community Price'' option was available to make this fundraiser more accessible to folks, regardless of financial stability. We were so pleased at the number of community members who were able to take advantage of that option and join us at the event! We believe that experiences, especially ones like the You-Pick, which allow people to connect with the land and with one another, should be accessible to people from all walks of life.

Save the date for Farmshare’s Tomato You-Pick Celebration on Saturday, June 18th. Details to follow!

Congratulations to Farmer Starter Graduates

The beginning of the new year brings in a fresh class of Farmer Starters. But before they arrive, we want to celebrate the Fall Farmer Starters who graduated in December! These 11 amazing humans are the third class of Farmer Starters to complete the program in the pandemic, which has presented its own set of unique challenges. Despite it all, they persevered and managed to thrive through the 20-week intensive program, honing in on their growing and business skills! Students wowed farmers’ market shoppers with their beautiful purple kohlrabi, a rainbow assortment of peppers, massive romanesco cauliflower, among so much more. Congratulations to the fall class of 2021, we are so proud of you and can’t wait to follow your farming journeys!!

Farmshare Austin x Urban Roots

Farmshare and local non-profit Urban Roots are excited to partner together to increase the amount of affordable, local produce available to low-income Fresh for Less customers. Fresh For Less has the goal of reducing economic and geographic barriers to accessing healthy, fresh and local food for people living in the Eastern Crescent of Austin and Travis County. We try to source as much produce as possible from local growers.

Urban Roots is an organization that cultivates leadership skills through food and farming to transform the lives of young people and inspire, engage, and nourish the community. They are working with Farmshare Austin to sell the produce their students grow to our Food Access program at a reduced price, which allows us to continue keeping our prices low for even more Fresh For Less customers.

"Urban Roots is excited to be working with Farmshare to supply produce grown by our incredible youth leaders, community volunteers, and staff to their Fresh For Less curbside service and mobile markets. It's a win/win for us that Farmshare is able to purchase the produce and make sure it's going to folks in the community who are facing barriers to food access. It's also a very valuable experience for our youth leaders to learn more about Farmshare's work. For example, young leaders from our Fellowship program recently had the opportunity to tour the Farmshare farm this past fall, plus our South Austin Interns are currently learning and sharing with residents about food access resources in Dove Springs and the South East Austin community.", says Programs Director Ian Hunter-Crawford.

Sourcing from local producers means that Fresh For Less customers have access to the freshest possible produce items that have traveled the least amount of miles, reducing their carbon footprint and storing greater nutritional value. Purchasing from local growers also contributes to the local economy, since the dollars spent do not travel outside of the greater Austin area.

Volunteer With Us

Farmshare’s Food Access Team is seeking volunteers to help with packing Fresh For Less orders on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 12-4pm. Volunteers receive a bag of farm-fresh organic produce to take home as a token of gratitude from us! Volunteer duties include, but are not limited to:

Sorting through produce for quality control

Bagging produce and grocery items

Breaking down cardboard boxes

Lifting produce boxes up to 50lbs

If you are interested in volunteering, please fill out this form or email foodaccess@farmshareaustin.org.

Support Our Work

If you are able, please consider making a donation of any size to Farmshare Austin. We're working hard to grow a new generation of sustainable farmers through Farmer Starter and increase food access through Fresh for Less Mobile Markets & Curbside Delivery. None of our work would be possible without the amazing support from our friends and neighbors like you!
