Soon Lent will be here.  Lent begins with Ash Wednesday on 2 March.  St. Mark’s will offer two services to start our journey with Jesus to Jerusalem and the cross.  Services for Ash Wednesday are at 12 noon and 6pm.
 
  As we hear in the Ash Wednesday liturgy, Lent is a time of preparation and reflection, a time for going deeper in our own spiritual lives.  Below is my Top Ten List of music, movies, and more that may be helpful to you.
 
10) Read the Passion Narratives together as a household.  The accounts can be found in Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.
9) Watch a cinematic version of the Gospels.  The Visual Bible has filmed versions of all four Gospels.
8) Listen to Easter portion of Handel’s Messiah.  There are also musical settings of the Gospels, including
7) Pray as You Go (a meditation and mindfulness app) and Living Compass (offering a free downloadable Lenten devotional booklet)         both have excellent seasonal resources.
6) Play Lent Madness (see related article).
5) Join us on Fridays at 6pm for Stations of the Cross.  We’ll take turns leading at each station.  The Stations will be followed by a simple soup and bread supper for those who wish to remain.
4) Join us on Wednesdays at 7pm for our Lenten programming.  We’ll look at what it means to be an Episcopalian and cover topics such as Sacraments, Liturgy, the Bible, The Book of Common Prayer, and Anglican ethics.  Gatherings will be both in person and via Zoom.
3) Take on some devotional reading.  There are many great options out there.  Some are even perfectly designed for Lent with 40 days of readings.
2) Bring your coffee and lunch from home during Lent.  Donate the money your save to worthy organizations like CHOW or Canteen.
1) Attend worship.

Lent Madness
 
It’s championship college hoops!  It’s the lives of the saints!  It’s Lent Madness! True True 
  From the Lent Madness website:
“The format is straightforward: 32 saints are placed into a tournament-like single elimination bracket.  Each pairing remains open for a set period of time and people vote for their favorite saint.  16 saints make it to the Round of the Saintly Sixteen; eight advance to the Round of the Elate Eight; four make it to the Faithful Four; two to the Championship; and the winner is awarded the coveted Golden Halo.  The first round consists of basic biographical information about each of the 32 saints.  Things get a bit more interesting in the subsequent rounds as we offer quotes and quirks, explore legends, and even move into the area of saintly kitsch “
  To start playing, fill out your bracket in the Saintly Scorecard.  The booklet contains brief bios to help you fill out your bracket.  Then each day, go to either lentmadness.org or the Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/lentmadness) to vote.  You can even have them send you a daily e-mail notification to remind you to vote.  Sadly, the Lentorium is out of scorecards.  You can still play, however, by visiting the aforementioned sites.  They give you the bios of the saints of the day and have a voting button.  Blank brackets (just the match ups) are available at St. Mark’s. 
  Not only is Lent Madness fun to play, it is also inspiring and informative as you learn about the lives of these holy women and men.  Feel free to contact Dawn-Victoria if you need any help playing or have any questions.  Full disclosure, Tim Schenk (the creator of Lent Madness) was a classmate of mine at Seabury-Western when I was doing my year of Anglican Studies.
 
 


What's with the "Alleluia"?
 

Alleluia is a joyful word which calls us to “Praise the Lord!”  Sometimes we also see its Hebrew form “Hallelujah!”  Lent is traditionally a more serious time in the liturgical year.  It then became the tradition in liturgical churches, such as the Episcopal Church, to not sing or say the “A” word during Lent.  To help us remember this, our younger members will be invited to hide the Alleluia banner on Sunday, 27 February.  We will then recover the banner from its hiding place on Easter Sunday as we joyously say “Alleluia!” once again.
 
Additionally, the inclusion of Alleluias in the liturgy (more specifically, the Opening Acclamation and the Dismissal) is normally reserved for The Great Fifty Days.  That is, between Easter and Pentecost.  This is found in italics in The Book of Common Prayer on the very bottom of page 366.  The addition of the Alleluias during this time reminds us that from Easter until Pentecost we are still celebrating Easter and Jesus’ victory over sin and death.
 

 

 

Ministry Opportunities
 

Dawn-Victoria is leading the Chapel at Good Shepherd-Fairview on fourth Sundays.  The half-hour service consists of hymn singing, Scripture, and a brief meditation.  If you would like to assist, please let Dawn-Victoria know.  She would welcome some musicians (especially pianists) and readers.  The service is at 3:30 p.m.
 
Our Prayer Shawl Ministry is looking for someone (or a couple of someones) who can keep track of supplies, inventory, and who might be working on a shawl at any given time  This includes making sure that yarn and completed shawls are on hand.  Currently, we have plenty of yarn and needles of various sizes available.  There are also some completed shawls ready for distribution to those who need prayers.  Hopefully we can get our knitters together soon to knit and enjoy one another’s company.
 


Lenten Practice Packets
 

We've partnered again this year with Vibrant Church Communications to provide you Lenten packets. Each packet contains a calendar, a booklet to follow the 40 days of lent, bookmarks, coloring page and supply list for activities.  In addition, we included a Life Transformed:  The Way of Love in Lent Calendar offering daily Bible readings.  Packets will be mailed out or you can pick them up at church.  


The Elevator is FIXED!!!
 

The elevator is now fixed!  Please thank Eric Laine I when you see him or drop him a note.  Eric persevered for months to get this repair accomplished.  He, along with Jeff Jacobs negotiated a labyrinth of red tape and communications to get a maintenance plan in place to get the repair done and provide us with elevator service in the future.  Thank you!!
 

 

CHOW Pantry Needs You
 

If you have an occasional hour to spare, we would appreciate your help.  CHOW Pantry assistance is  often needed on Tuesday and possibly Thursday mornings to prepare orders for our CHOW clients.  For more information, please call Irma at 607-648-8193 or Kathy at the church office 607-648-4400.
 

 

Save The Date
 

A Celebration of New Ministry will be held on Tuesday, May 10, 2022 at 6 pm.  Bishop DeDe Duncan-Probe will be here to officially welcome Rev. Dawn-Victoria Mitchell as Priest-in-Charge.  A reception follows in the undercroft. 

 

Holy Eucharist - Reminder
 

The Eucharist is bread only.  Approach the altar while maintaining 6 foot distance and keeping your mask on.  Remain standing at the center of the rails.  Receive the Host and return to your seat and remove your mask briefly to consume the Host.  The collection plates will NOT be passed.  They are placed at the entrances to the nave for your convenience.  Masks are required.  Please sign in upon arrival for the purpose of contact tracing. 
 

 

Women's Fellowship Brunch
 

The next women's fellowship brunch will be held on March 9, 2022 in the undercroft.  All women are invited to attend.  Bring a dish to pass or just yourself.  Come join us as we gather to break bread and spend time together.
