February Festivities

Celebrate Groundhog Day on February 2 and find out from our furry experts if we will have an early spring or six more weeks of winter! Groundhog Day is celebrated on February 2 because it is exactly halfway between the winter solstice and the spring equinox. Learn more about the history of Groundhog Day by clicking here.

We also celebrate Valentine’s Day on February 14. Join us for a showing of the movie Valentine’s Day, the star studded romantic comedy, on February 9 and a receive a special treat after hot lunch on February 10 for this sweet holiday! Read more about the history of Valentine’s Day here.

The Senior Center will be closed on Monday, February 21 in observance of Presidents’ Day. This holiday began in 1800 as a day of remembrance of George Washington, who passed away in 1799. Remember that many offices will be closed and there will be no mail delivery on this date.

 
Hot Meals

Fundraiser Luncheon
Join us Friday, February 25 at 12:00 p.m. for a fundraiser luncheon in the Community Cabin. Avon Place is sponsoring a Loaded Baked Potato Soup, Garden Salad and Ambrosia Salad for Dessert. All cash or check donations will support Senior Center programming. Please make checks out to City of North Olmsted. Sign up by February 21.

Hot Lunch Program
The North Olmsted Senior Center offers hot lunches every Tuesday and Thursday, as well as the second and fourth Wednesdays of every month at 11:30 a.m.

Sign up one week in advance to enjoy a nutritious meal for a $1 suggested donation. All participants must be 60 years of age or older. Click here to view the February lunch menu. New members can complete the one-time registration form in advance here or pick up a form in person.

 

After Lunch

After Hot Lunch we offer movies, entertainment, educational speakers and more! Stay after lunch or stop in for these engaging activities.

Gaming Hour
Stay and play after lunch on the first Tuesday of the month. Board games, card games and Wii gaming options will be provided. Grab your favorite game and have fun with your friends! Gaming suggestions are welcome.

Tech Tuesdays
On Tuesdays at 12:30 p.m., the Senior Center will offer Tech Tuesday Help Desk hours. You will be able to bring in your devices (iPads, cell phones or laptops) and support teams will address your questions about FaceTime, email, social media, Google, texting and general device support. No appointments necessary.

Tom Todd – February 3
Tom plays an assortment of instruments to a diverse collection of sing-a-long songs and fun nostalgic melodies. Join us for a fun-filled hour of music.

Aging Isn’t for Sissies – February 10
Great Lakes Accessibility will present this humorous and informative presentation on fall prevention. A special treat will be provided for all attendees in celebration of Valentine’s Day.

John Kowalski – February 17
We are excited to welcome back John Kowalski to our entertainment schedule. John plays keyboard to a variety of your all-time favorite tunes.

Senior Care Options – February 24
Tiffany Morgan from the Senior Care Authority will offer information on home care, senior living, insurance coverage, veteran benefits and more! This is an interactive session and audience participation is highly encouraged. Bring your questions and leave with a better understanding of senior living and caring solutions.

 
Stay Active

Wednesdays Walkers
Every Wednesday at 10:00 a.m., join our ambitious group of walkers in staying active and healthy on North Olmsted Park’s walking path. We will meet at the Senior Center and walk the south side of the walking path. You are free to walk the distance of your choice.

Yoga – Chair & Standing
Yoga Instructor Evelyna Nightingale instructs two yoga classes per week on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday’s class will be a Standing & Mat class and Thursday’s class will be Chair Yoga. Classes are $5 per class or sign up for the session and receive a discount.

Chair Volleyball
Chair Volleyball is offered every first and third Friday at 10:00 a.m. Join referee Toni Holtzhauser and this lively group for an exciting morning of high energy volleyball, all while seated in your chair!

Geri Fit
Join Carol Silvay for Geri-Fit exercise classes every Monday and Friday from 8:45 to 9:45 a.m. in the Community Cabin. Class fee of $10 per four-week session is payable to the instructor at the time of class.

 
Health & Wellness

Lunch & Learn
On Friday, February 11 at 12:00 p.m. Emerald Village and Holy Family Home will present “Beyond the Hospital.” Representatives Dana and Nicole will offer an interactive experience designed to help educate you about the different levels of care available. Everything you need to know about Skilled Nursing Facilities, Assisted Living, Independent Living, Hospice, Home Care and Palliative Care will be covered. Answer true or false questions while learning important information! Sign up by February 8.

Blood Pressure
UH St. John Community Outreach will offer free blood pressure screenings on Monday, January 10 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

OSHIIP
Rita Dowd-Mikolajczyk, volunteer with the Ohio Senior Health Insurance Information Program (OSHIIP), offers one-on-one Medicare plan counseling on the third Wednesday of every month. The next scheduled date is February 16 from 11:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. by appointment. If you are new to Medicare or want to further your understanding of Medicare and its plan options, Rita can answer your questions! Appointments required.

Seniors Strong Support Group
The Seniors Strong group supports emotional health and combats loneliness through meetings facilitated by Bob Piovarchy, Licensed Professional Counselor with the Far West Center. This group meets on the third Thursday of every month at 10:00 a.m. in the Atrium. The next meeting will be Thursday, February 17.

Maple PTA Mobile Produce Pantry 
Offered on the fourth Tuesday of every month from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in collaboration with the Greater Cleveland Food Bank, the Maple PTA will provide free, fresh produce for the North Olmsted community at Maple Intermediate School, located at 24101 Maple Ridge Road. The next date is Tuesday, February 22. This is a drive-through service. You do not have to leave your vehicle. Click here for details.

 
Fun & Games

Book Club

The Book Club will meet on Friday, February 18 at 1:00 p.m. in the Senior Center Activity Room to discuss The Wish by Nicholas Sparks. If wishes could come true, this would be the Nicholas Sparks novel you’ve been asking for . . . The story of Maggie and Bryce is a timeless, cinematic read traversing both discovery and loss, and above all, the question of what it is we most wish.

Bridge & Pinochle
Every Monday from 11:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., bridge and pinochle groups enjoy an afternoon of card playing and socializing. New players are always welcome.

Mexican Train Dominoes
Every Monday at 12:30 p.m., join us to play Mexican Train Dominoes. This game is easy to learn. Stop by and give it a try!

Artistry Hour Social Club
Join us every Tuesday and Thursday at 10:30 a.m. for a relaxed social gathering. Bring your own hand-made projects to work on while enjoying the company of your friends. Knit, crochet, quilt or create!
