Review of GeoBeer #35 and planning 2022...

Dear Friends of GeoBeer

We hope this e-mail finds you well (sincerely!).

A new year is a new year for GeoBeer! But let's not get ahead of ourselves. We held GeoBeer #35 in December, after all, and want to give a you a brief review of the event.

GeoBeer #35

We "met" online on Zoom and, meeting and mingling being a bit more difficult in this setting, we put a bit more emphasis on the talks. We had three great ⚡ lightning talks by Daria Luedtke, Riccardo Klinger and Regina Obe.

First, Daria Luedtke, CTO of Wegaw, Steering Committee member and Western Europe ambassador of Women+ in Geospatial, spoke to us about Women+ in Geospatial and gender (in)equality in our domain. You can find Daria's informative and sometimes truly sobering slides here: Women+ in Geospatial – Community building to promote gender equality in geospatial.

Next, Riccardo Klinger of digital-geography.com and based in Germany gave us an interesting presentation on vector tiles and styles. In it he gave a technical overview of a workflow using Tippecanoe and Leaflet plus the VectorGrid plugin as a simple vector-tile-capable viewer. You can find Riccardo's slides here: Pankow Vector (S)tiles.

Last but definitely not least, Regina Obe, PostGIS Project Steering Committee member and core developer, President of Paragon Corporation and based in the USA, gave us a talk about some really cool upcoming features in PostGIS 3.2.0 (by now released). She highlighted, among others, ST_DumpSegments, ST_Boundary support for TINS, postgis_raster and changes to postgis_topology. You can find Regina's slides here: PostGIS 3.2.0 Coming Highlights.

GeoBeer #35 Review

GeoBeer #35+

Let's see where 2022 will take us. Like probably everybody, we're following the Corona developments  in Switzerland closely and are cautiously optimistic that we might be able to organize a physical GeoBeer again soon (fingers crossed!). If not, we can of course envision another online GeoBeer open to guests and speakers also from abroad. Let's see. We will definitely keep you abreast of all developments – here in our newsletter and over on Twitter.

That's it from us for now (and here). We wish you much energy and a good time. Stay healthy and see you hopefully very soon!

– Stephan, Anne, and Ralph
