Dear friends and partners,

As Los Angeles gets ready to cheer on the Rams at home in the Super Bowl, we are also looking forward to some exciting new updates for our kids and families. Today, I welcomed our incoming Superintendent to Taft High and Richland Ave Elementary – complete with an orchestral greeting, visits to engineering and fashion design classes, and an enthusiastic bonjour from a thriving French Immersion class taking place in the school garden.

We look forward to Supt. Carvalho officially joining us in just a few weeks. As he hits the ground running, his first priority will be to continue our Covid recovery efforts and support students academically and socio-emotionally. We are grateful that the District’s comprehensive testing and safety protocols have kept 100% of schools open safely during the recent Omicron surge.

As we are hopefully nearing the end of this latest spike, LAUSD’s positivity rates are half of overall LA County rates and cases continue to trend downward as attendance numbers keep climbing. We will keep monitoring and adapting to provide the safest possible in-person learning environments while following the science and public health guidance to inform our next steps. As always, I will keep pushing for students and families to be at the center of our decisions as we continue to weather the pandemic in our school communities.

It has been a jam-packed few weeks meeting with our school communities as everyone settles in to the new semester! In addition to today's tours of Taft HS and Richland K-8 with Supt. Carvalho, I've been thrilled to start meeting the new BD4 schools in the Reseda community, beginning with Reseda HS, SOCES, Newcastle ES, and Bertrand ES. I was also glad to visit Revere MS, Kenter Canyon ES, Calvert ES, Uni HS, Mar Vista ES, Grand View ES, and Laurel K-8—and last but not least, I was excited to join the NFL and numerous community partners for their "Super Kids" event to collect donations and give back to our local schools leading up to the Super Bowl!
In the Spotlight: It's Never too Late to Graduate!
LAUSD is here for students of all ages—like Christian Agee, who recently graduated from West Valley Occupational Center (WVOC), earning his high school diploma. Chris attended his local high school, but needed more time to complete his courses and make it over the finish line. The District's Division of Adult Education (DACE) exists for students just like Chris, because everyone deserves the chance to earn their diploma, gain the skills they need, and prepare themselves for whatever comes next! Chris was able to graduate from WVOC while working full-time, and is continuing his studies in criminology and public safety at community college. Congratulations to Chris and thank you to all of our adult educators for ensuring that it's never too late to graduate in LAUSD!
