Background

About half of all children in the United States (40 million) are now insured through Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) –– the vast majority in Medicaid.

Millions of children are expected to lose Medicaid coverage when the continuous enrollment requirement lifts at the end of the public health emergency.

The report examines the following questions:
  • How many children are at risk of becoming uninsured for some period of time?
  • In which states are children most at risk of losing coverage?
  • What actions can state and federal policymakers take to avoid coverage losses?
