All hands for masks:
UW Covid response mobilizing
UW-Madison Leadership has announced they will drop the mask mandate on March 12. In doing so, they have ignored COVID-19 student advisory board recommendations, their own commitment to shared governance, the demands of the BIPOC Coalition, the TAA, and UFAS’ fall demands. Their own announcement reads, “The research strongly suggests that individuals who are vaccinated, boosted, and wearing a high-quality mask have a high degree of protection, regardless of what other individuals around them may choose. That means we’re at a point where responsible behavior is up to the individual to decide.”
As we all know by now, pandemics are best addressed socially and large institutions like UW-Madison and UW-System are not exceptions. UW-Madison is shirking its responsibility by leaning on rugged individualism. We are a community, and we must take care of our whole community. Asking disabled folks, immunocompromised folks, children under five, and people who simply wish to avoid contracting and transmitting a novel coronavirus with unclear long-term effects to pull themselves up by their bootstraps shows blatant disregard for the wellbeing and care of our community.
All organizations and individuals who want to mobilize for safety are invited. We can’t believe we still have to do this.
