Dear Snowmobilers:

Avalanche Canada has not been able to attend the Alberta or Saskatchewan Snowmobile Association shows for the past two years and we feel like we’ve lost some connection with the sledding community. We wanted to keep you in the loop and let you know what we’ve been up to and what resources you might be interested in.

This year, we continued with our free webinar series. We have several coming up that you might enjoy:
  • February 24: Conditions update in North Rockies and NW Inland regions, presented by field team members Martina Halik and Emily Jones.
  • March 10: The Daily Mindset—a panel discussion with Nadine Overwater, Paddy Jerome and Holly Walker.
  • March 31: Transition to spring—stay in tune with spring conditions so you can continue enjoying your riding, with field tech Drew Nylen.

Pre-registration is required. Please go to our website and click on the link for each date to sign up.

We’ve already had some great webinars this year and last, all of which have been recorded. Here are some you might want to check out:
Last winter, we launched Avy Savvy, our new online tutorial. This is a great site to learn something new or refresh your knowledge. There are quizzes associated with the various chapters. We have interactive terrain exercises and trip planning exercises which are particularly engaging. Test your knowledge!

Did you know we have a new AST 1 Handbook written for sledders? All students on snowmobile AST 1 courses get this book, but it is also available for sale to the public for $26.00 (tax and shipping inclusive). You can order it through the AvCan store.

Many of you use the Mountain Information Network (MIN), for which we are so grateful! Your observations help out both your fellow riders and our forecasters, who comb through the reports daily as they write their forecasts. MIN reports are particularly important in data-sparse regions, where many of you ride. If you are new to the MIN or want to learn more check out our website. We also have a page to help you understand common MIN acronyms. We have a MIN to Win contest weekly, and you could be a winner!
Keep those MIN posts coming!

Ever not been sure where to go riding? Check out our online Trip Planner, which features terrain ratings for most managed snowmobile areas. The trip planner combines the Avalanche Terrain Exposure Scale rating for an area with the danger rating to provide advice on the level of caution you should exercise while out in the mountains. You can also download the maps as a kmz file and use it on your smartphone or GPS device.

We have recently revamped our website and have resource pages for various backcountry users. We have a page for mountain snowmobiling where you will find lots of information. Check it out!

Do you have any feedback? Feel free to contact us.

Have a fun and safe rest of the winter.
