WOMEN AND GENDER EQUALITY CANADA PROJECT UPDATE

WinSETT: Reducing Systemic Barriers in Science, Engineering, Trades and Technology to Advance More Women In SETT

Work is progressing on this 30-month project where the WinSETT Centre is addressing systemic barriers in SETT workplaces. Specifically, the project has three main subprojects that will help SETT organizations assess their culture, identify strategies and build plans to advance more women in SETT by developing an online assessment and action planning application; delivering a certification program that provides managers with the skills to improve workplace culture and positioning women in SETT for success by developing their leadership and career management skills.

To achieve these outcomes, the project will build on outcomes from past WAGE projects and work with partners to develop and implement tools, materials and training that are credible, relevant, and scalable to help more SETT organizations reduce systemic barriers and position more women for career advancement and success.

Members were excited to present at the recent CCWESTT conference in Halifax.  It certainly was great to once again to build connections and share ideas. The conference gave the project members an opportunity to receive feedback and share information about the project. Erica Lee-Garcia and Christina Gale highlighted the work that they are doing in a session called Better Together: Accelerating SETT Women’s Personal and Professional Success through Group Coaching and Online Community.  Carrie Vos presented a session on the Needs Assessment that was conducted as part of the Certification Program for Managers.  Katherine Sinex presented a session on Revitalizing the WinSETT Checklist of Strategies for Women in SETT.  Collaborating, sharing and learning from one another was definitely a highlight.  A short video of WinSETT at CCWESTT can be viewed here. The conference also gave the steering committee a chance to meet and plan.

We are looking forward to the work that will occur over the next several months as we move forward with this project.

CCWESTT Conference

In May, several members of the WinSETT Board attended the CCWEST Conference in Halifax, NS. The conference was a wonderful opportunity to learn from and network with other organizations supporting women in Science, Engineering, Trades and Technology. WinSETT board members presented several sessions. Sarah Watts-Rynard and Marg Latham presented along with Edna Dach (WinSETT WAGE Project PM) on WinSETT – Who are We? Where Have We Been and Where Are We Going?

Farewell to WinSETT board member Joy Brown

Joy Brown is retiring from the WinSETT Board after being a member for 10 years. Joy is a Senior Explorationist at TAQA North and was a supporter of the CCWESTT Working Committee that led to the creation of WinSETT, later joining the Board in 2012. Over the years Joy has supported many sub-committees of WinSETT and hosted WinSETT women in oil and gas industry meetings. She was most recently participating on the Board as Secretary. Joy also signed WinSETT up for Benevity to help the organization raise funds. Joy is a tremendous supporter of women in SETT and she will be greatly missed!
Welcome Sara Myers to the WinSETT board

WinSETT is excited to welcome a new Board member, Sara Myers. Sara is joining the Board as the new Treasurer. Sara graduated from Memorial University of Newfoundland with a Bachelor of Business Administration in 2012. She is the Controller for Lotus Group, a Human Resources and Search virtual collective offering Elevated People Solutions. She oversees the financial reporting, ensures compliance and audit measures are in place, and adapts quickly to the business's needs. As a valued member of Lotus's Executive team, Sara helps the organization grow, while managing all operational day-to-day accounting activities.
WinSETT and NL Workforce Innovation Centre Project Update
Enhancing the Women in SETT Leadership Program in Newfoundland and Labrador was a research project led by WinSETT and funded by the NL Workforce Innovation Centre (NLWIC).

Established in 2017 by the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador and administered by College of the North Atlantic, NLWIC has a provincial mandate to provide a coordinated, central point of access to engage all labour market stakeholders about challenges, opportunities and best practices in workforce development. The Centre’s goal is to promote and support the research, testing and sharing of ideas and models of innovation in workforce development that will positively impact employability, employment and entrepreneurship within the province’s labour force and particularly underrepresented groups. Funding for NLWIC is provided by the Department of Immigration, Population Growth and Skills (IPGS) under the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Labour Market Development Agreement.

WinSETT would like to thank the NL Workforce Innovation Centre for their generous support of the research project led by Susan Hollett. Through this project, WinSETT can more effectively support women in remote areas with achieving their leadership goals. Susan presented a session about this project at the CCWESTT Conference called Leapfrogging to Online: Sharing Lessons Learned and Effective Practices to Move the WinSETT in Person Leadership Program to the Virtual World.
