Dear friends and partners,

As Angelenos celebrated the Rams’ Super Bowl championship, LAUSD also celebrated the official arrival of a champion for education — new Superintendent Alberto Carvalho. Supt. Carvalho has already emphasized his commitment to prioritizing the academic and socio-emotional recovery of our students from this pandemic.
I have been consistent in pushing LAUSD to align safety protocols with official public health guidelines, and I am pleased to announce that — in accordance with the recent County update —outdoor masking will become optional on all school campuses beginning next week.

Supt. Carvalho has previewed an ambitious list of priorities that include expanding families’ access to high-quality educational options, increasing early education opportunities, and elevating the voices of students and parents to drive the District’s work.

I will continue to push for our families to be at the center of every decision we make, and I am thrilled to welcome a talented new partner in leading the District out of this crisis and into a brighter future.

Onward,

In the Community: The Latest from Board District 4
Over the past weeks, I was thrilled to show our new Superintendent around Warner Ave ES, check out the plans for the new Nora Sterry ES Japanese Dual Immersion program, visit classrooms at Fairburn ES and Palisades ES, and meet with the Human Rights Watch student task force at Pali HS. It has also been exciting to continue meeting the new BD4 schools in the Reseda community, including Emelita Ave ES, Reseda ES, Garden Grove ES, Vanalden ES, and Vanalden EEC!
In the Spotlight: Performing for Change at Westwood Elementary
Kareena Desai, a fourth grader at Westwood Charter Elementary, recently created a group called Perform for Change to raise money for global issues like climate change using the arts. While raising money to fight the climate crisis, she came to discover that plastic pollution is a major contributor. She decided to share what she learned with her classmates, prompting her class to take a pledge to use reusable water bottles instead of single-use plastic water bottles for a week. More than two weeks have now gone by, and the class is still using reusable water bottles every day. Kareena hopes that students and adults everywhere can make small changes like this and use the arts to raise awareness about these issues. You can email performforchange@gmail.com to see how you can help Kareena’s efforts to make a big impact on the future of our planet.
