Over the past couple of weeks, many of you have been commenting on how cheering it is to see the garden centre looking so full of colour. We love it too! This is a wonderful time of year in the garden, with those first signs of spring emerging and the promise of so much more to come…

Spring bulbs are popping up!

One source of colour right now in the bedding area is our selection of potted outdoor bulbs for spring. These are a perfect way to add quick and easy colour to your garden. Those starting to bloom now include Anemones, Hyacinths, Daffodils, Muscari, Iris reticulata and Snakeshead Fritillary.

And don’t miss our hand-picked selection of Tulips, with varieties ready to flower from late March onwards. From the dainty to the statuesque and in shades ranging from subtle to decidedly bold, we have something for any tulip fan.

Spring care for houseplants

March is a great time to re-pot any of your houseplants that are outgrowing their pots or are otherwise looking in need of a little TLC. Remember to always plant into pots with drainage, as plant roots will drown if they sit in waterlogged compost. You can then sit the pot in a saucer or place it inside a decorative pot cover to fit your decor.

Most houseplants will do best if grown in either houseplant compost or another specialist medium to suit that plant (for instance, there is a special mix for succulents and cacti). You can also start feeding your houseplants now - as they go into more active growth in spring they will be able to take up the extra nutrients provided and will feel all the better for it!

You can find everything you need for houseplant care in our shop, including the helpful advice of our staff. If you have any questions, just ask!

2022 perennial and alpine range

We know a lot of you will be excited to see that our range of 9cm perennials and alpines is back in stock for the new growing season. By buying these younger plants and getting them established early in the year, you can fill your pots or borders for a fraction of the cost of buying larger, more mature plants. They are also great for planting in multiples, which helps to fill spaces more quickly and can provide greater impact in the garden.

The alpine plants pair beautifully with our alpine troughs, giving you the chance to create a long-lasting display even in a small garden. Many alpines are spring flowering, including Saxifrage, Aubrieta and Armeria, so you won’t have to wait long for a show. Be sure to include some sedums too, which flower later (from midsummer onwards).

Seeds to sow in March and April

As we move into March there are a lot more things that you can sow. As the soil begins to warm up, hardy annual flowers and vegetables can be sown directly into the ground. However, some seeds and seedlings will still need the protection of a warmer environment at this time of year. You may even choose to start some of the hardier varieties indoors in pots or modules, as it can be a good way to (try to) protect your baby seedlings from the hunger of slugs and snails!

Check seed packets if you’re unsure about the sowing requirements of the things you want to grow. Plus, see our growing guide for more in-depth information - available at the seed sowing display in our bedding department and on our website.
