the word: Sabbatical
by Kerlin

I began planning a sabbatical in January of 2020 thinking it would be in June of 2021.
Everything got demolished by the pandemic.

I have a wonderful and joy filled calling in being in ministry with you all. And… I am weary. I know some of you have some questions, and here are a few answers.

Q: Does this just mean you are leaving?
A: Nope. The goal of a sabbatical is to refuel and revive enough to make staying possible. I have no plans to leave Saint David’s.

Q: Why Lent, Holy Week and Easter?
A: Last fall as I was discussing this with the vestry and my spiritual director, I felt like I was running on fumes and was thinking of starting my sabbatical on January 1st. There was even some discussion of taking a six month sabbatical. I realized that January would have been too soon, so I decided I could hold on until March. I confess that part of me was worried that the further out we pushed it the more likely it was to get canceled again.

Q: What is the purpose of a sabbatical?
A: Being the rector of a church can be more than a full time job. Without taking time to rest and reflect, it can become an all-encompassing identity. This is why taking a sabbatical every five years is the standard and recommended practice for Episcopal priests.

In my case—particularly during the ongoing pandemic— I sometimes lose sight of who I am outside of my role. And I believe sometimes the church loses sight of who you are apart from me. These three months will give me a chance to live into who I am as a child of God and will give Saint David's a chance to live into who you are as a congregation. Saint David’s has been around for over 150 years and, God willing, will be around for 150 more. You are not now and never have been the priest who serves you.

Q: Who do we contact when we need something?
A: You contact the same people who are here for you all the time:

~Kerlin

Join Kerlin at 9:30am on Monday, February 21 (on Zoom, of course) for a run through of the mechanics of morning prayer.
