Join our weekly online fiddle class/session

I lead a fiddle class online every Monday at 7pm.

The class/session is for all fiddlers or violinists interested in learning Scottish dance music and slow airs are welcome to join us, including:

  • Relatively new adult fiddle learners (at least two years of playing)
  • Fluid players wanting to develop their technique
  • Classical players wanting to try folk fiddling
  • Players wanting to widen their repertoire and general playing. I offer support for tone, bowing, left hand, rhythm and reading music and anything else that arises
  • Players wanting the convenience of staying at home while meeting other fiddlers from around the world

Testimonies

"I thoroughly enjoy the company. The gentle pace gives me time to read music and hear the detail in Mairi's playing. It’s technical and practical, a great combination."

"Mairi's slow sessions have been hugely inspiring and motivating! Taking tunes at a modest pace together with Mairi's exercises and hints has made an enormous difference not only to my repertoire but also to my technique. Playing with others from around the world is great fun."

Current projects

Tickets are up now for the Silent film festival HippFest in Bo'ness. I'm working with Marion Kenny on creating the music for a silent movie about Margaret Kennedy Fraser, a song collector who lived in South Uist. Tickets at hippodromecinema.co.uk

Other news is that I've signed up for Rosie Bans' songwriting course which is a 10-week bonanza, starting yesterday! She's a wonder. I'm completely in awe of her teaching skills and hope to have a few new songs under my belt by the end of it. I strongly recommend anyone needing a pickmeup to check out Rosie's 'Radical Songwriting Academy'.

And finally, I'm really pleased that Dawne McFarlane and I have won an award from Creative Scotland's Tasgadh fund recently to make an online show of story and music, which should be ready for May. This means I hope to be on the road in the Autumn with quite a big solo tour getting fixed up throughout Scotland. Dates to be announced in the next couple of months.

"This is where dreams are made"

This song "This is where dreams are made" has never found its exact form. I've recorded it a few times and it was even known at one point as "Tickle your epic" thanks to some feedback from Ellis Kerkhoven during one of Kath Burlinson's Authentic Artist workshops. This song expresses my feelings about what happened when my beat and rhythmic pulse in music started to arrive around 2014 and I could hold it more consistently. Once it dropped, I could relax and let my sounds/voice move through. Do consider a workshop with Kath if you've artistry you'd like to explore and get out.

We also used this song for the finale of the production 'Wolves' with Barrowland Ballet in 2018. I hope you enjoy it.

And if you're enjoying any of my work, you might consider buying me a coffee or the equivalent through Ko-fi, a donation site for creators. It's much appreciated.

As always, all the best till we meet again.
