TAP-SF Volunteers: Lunar New Year Card Writing

Thank you to those who joined us last month as we wrote cards for seniors in partnership with the Chinatown Community Development Center. We had a wonderful sun-filled afternoon of card writing, drawing tigers, and getting to know others in the community!

Missed this community service event? No worries — join us in March for our next one (details below)!

When You Hear Beethoven, It’s Time to Take Out the Trash (and Mingle)
Published by The New York Times on Feb 8, 2022

Hear that music blaring from the road? In Taiwan, it's not the ice-cream truck calling— it's the garbage truck!

If you remember hearing the first bars of “Für Elise” or “Maiden’s Prayer” during nights in Taiwan, you are likely familiar with why these tunes play throughout Taiwanese neighborhoods everyday. But do you know how this trash collection system originated?

Click below to read how trash collection time in Taiwan has turned a mundane household chore into an activity that fosters community and led Taiwan to a recycling rate second only to Germany.

TAP-SF Volunteers: Alcatraz Historic Gardens

When: Saturday, March 12 from 8AM -12PM
Where: Alcatraz Island
Register here

The extraordinary gardens of Alcatraz reflect a rich history of horticulture and gardening ideas spanning many different eras, including floriferous Victorian cottage gardens, terraced cutting beds, and environmentally sensitive attempts at erosion control. Since 2003, garden volunteer crews have been working each week to re-establish the historic gardens. Volunteer activities include weeding, pruning, and planting.

Through the project, volunteers will be introduced to the stories of the gardens and have the opportunity to visit some areas not accessible to the public. As an added bonus, garden volunteers arrive on Alcatraz before other visitors, so you can experience the island during the most tranquil time of day. All necessary tools, gloves, and training will be provided. Complimentary round-trip ferry to Alcatraz is provided by the National Park Service via Alcatraz Cruises.
