February 2022
Karzo welcomes you to our February Business and Logistics Newsletter. The World Bank released Myanmar Economic Monitor Jan 2022: Contending with Constraints, which succinctly summarizes the position here in country: “Myanmar’s economy continues to be severely tested by the ongoing impacts of the military coup and the surge in COVID-19 cases in 2021.” Indicators mirror an economic slowdown and general difficulties across almost all sectors. That said, the report finds that despite these constraints, there are recent signs of economic stabilization. World Bank estimates forecast GDP growth in 2022 of 1 percent; an improvement versus 2021 (-18 percent) albeit considerably lagging all neighbors who are now bouncing out of the ongoing effects of COVID-19. We strongly recommend a read to obtain a useful outlook.

What has been emphasized is the resilience of the private sector in Myanmar in conditions unparalleled in any other country through 2021. Recent exits from Chevron Corp. and Total Energies indicate the difficulty for international businesses who have historically cooperated with the Myanmar Military. The withdrawal of Kirin and Telenor from JVs mark two high profile cases, with issues exacerbated by political constraints such as the outlawing of VPNs. Meanwhile, Taiwanese shipping line Evergreen has rejected working with any military-linked ports. International engagement remains key to ensuring FDI can continue in a meaningful way. FX appears to have stabilized after the inevitable impact of Brent spikes and MMK weakness on fuel prices. In the wider geo-political environs, concerns around interest rate hikes in the UK and US leave markets unsettled, which is now second to unease being caused by Russian volatility at its borders with Ukraine. Maersk predicts continued trouble within global supply chains in spite of record USD18bn net profits in 2021. Please scroll down for details on these stories and more about global business news.
