IN THIS ISSUE: NEW USPTO PATENT SEARCH TOOL, CALL FOR ABSTRACTS, INVENTOR INSIGHTS, FELLOW AWARDS & MEMBER NEWS!

The National Academy of Inventors (NAI) has much to celebrate this month! In honor of Black History Month, and in alignment with our mission to recognize and encourage academic inventors with U.S. patents, we are highlighting the accomplishments of black NAI member inventors and their contributions to society in our February Invention Insider column and social media. I hope you will pause to join us in recognizing this impressive group.

Our celebration does not stop there. On February 8, NAI Board member Dr. Karen Burg, FNAI, was the recipient of a Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring from the National Science Foundation. On February 11, National Inventors Day, we announced the election of our largest class of Senior Members to date - 83, hailing from over 41 NAI member institutions and representing over 1,093 issues U.S. patents; and that evening, we witnessed six NAI Fellows get elected into the Florida Inventors Hall of Fame.

Finally, I am proud to announce that NAI has joined the HIBAR Research Alliance (HRA) as an Institutional Affiliate and looks forward to working together to make an even greater impact. The mission of the HRA, to catalyze the significant expansion of collaboration between university-based researchers and non-academic participants, working together as equal partners, in order to discover new knowledge and greatly accelerate progress toward solving society’s critical problems. HRA is aligned with the NAI mission components of enhancing the visibility of academic technology and innovation, encouraging the disclosure of intellectual property, educating and mentoring innovative students, and translating the inventions of its members to benefit society.

To learn more about the HRA, visit their website and watch for upcoming programming and opportunities to be announced in our newsletter.

 - Jamie Renee, Executive Director of the NAI

The HIBAR Research Alliance (HRA) is delighted to have the opportunity work with the NAI to further our shared vision of an improved research and innovation ecosystem that better contributes to solving society’s critical problems. Our mutual activities are in response to the widespread need to change the culture within academia, and the HRA strongly supports NAI’s ongoing efforts to honor inventors who patent their discoveries and stimulate the economy by bringing their products to the marketplace. We look forward to finding ways that we can together accelerate development and application of breakthrough knowledge.
 - Lorne Whitehead, FNAI 2017, Director, HIBAR Research Alliance

This month, in our continued efforts to share personal stories and insights from NAI inventors, we hear from Dr. Thomas Mensah, FNAI 2015, an engineer whose work revolutionized the internet.

"I am one of the four creators of laser-based fiber optics that carry all data and information on the modern-day internet platform and has given rise to companies like Facebook, Twitter, Tiktok, Ali Baba, Amazon, Google etc., and allowed people to send Facebook photos from their cell phones and access ATMs all over the world.

After earning my engineering degree from MIT, I was hired to solve a problem. Before 1985, everything was based on copper wiring. It was impossible to move technology from the lab to industry..."
