US EMBASSY LOME AWARDED GRANT TO PATHWAYS TOGO TO SUPPORT UNIVERSITY PROGRAM

Pathways Togo was awarded a grant from the US Embassy Lomé to expand our support for 63 university students! The grant includes support for our existing 21 university scholars and 12 new Pathways Champions - university students who will be supported through the grant on a year to year basis. It also includes expanding our university scholar workshops to 40 additional university students. The first workshop was held November 24 to 26, and included a training on computer basics, distance learning applications, and general orientation to university with individualized guidance to scholars based on their professional objectives. The scholars also had the honor of meeting US Embassy Lomé staff which officially launched the partnership!

We want to thank the US Embassy Lomé for this amazing opportunity and for their commitment to women’s empowerment in Togo! Educate women, empower the world!

WOMEN ENCOURAGING WOMEN

At the first University workshop of the year, young professional women and Pathways Togo alumni inspired the participants by sharing their experiences of university life and the courage that girls must possess to succeed at the university. More specifically, Dr. Yanou, Pathways Togo alumnae, back from Cuba after earning her doctorate in Medicine, gave this valuable advice to medical students:

The university scholars also received encouragement from their fellow university scholar - Mounira - who performed a poetry “slam." She is a third year university student studying American Literature. She is the eldest of her family and the hope of her entire community. Her dream is to become a bilingual journalist. Her words capture the struggle our scholars face in pursuit of education and the amazing resilience, courage and heart it takes to succeed despite the odds and the "dream breakers" in their lives.  See below for the full lyrics of her poem as well as links to watch her performance on Instagram and/or YouTube.

PATHWAYS TOGO'S FIRST DOCTOR!

Our scholar, Yanou, just returned to Togo after earning her Doctorate in Medicine from the Latin American School of Medicine in Cuba! We are very proud of her!! She sent us the following message upon her return:
Hello Dear Donors,
I am really delighted to see you sharing my joy at having successfully completed my 7 years of medical studies. Thank you very much from the bottom of my heart for your support and encouragement.
Regarding my short-term plans, I intend to leave Lomé shortly to visit my family who are in Blitta. And then come back to settle in Lomé since in the long term, I plan to continue my studies in a specialty and I want to specialize in: Cardiology.
Thank you so much.
Yanou
Until Yanou received a Pathways Togo scholarship, her mother paid her school fees while Yanou sold fruit on the street to pay for books and school supplies. Despite these efforts, she still could not afford all of her books. The support from Pathways Togo allowed Yanou to focus on her studies and have all the books and supplies she needed to succeed. And WOW! Did she succeed! Her hard work and support from Pathways Togo took her all the way to medical school on the other side of the world! And now she is home and plans to serve in Togo which has a critical need for doctors!  She is now serving as an intern at the biggest hospital in Togo - CHU Sylvanus Olympio. We are over the moon for her!

GETTING READY FOR NEXT CLUSTER OF SCHOLARS IN CENTRAL REGION

From January 10th to 20th, 2022, The middle and high school Program Administrator, Grace Attignon, conducted a mission to the Central region, specifically to Kamboli, Djarkpanga, Cessaro and Blitta, to begin preparations for the selection of new scholars in the clusters.  At the end of the mission, Grace met with 65 education partners in addition to the Inspectors or their representatives.
During the visits, the community leaders and girls she visited were informed about the importance of girls' education.  In addition, informational letters about the Pathways Togo selection process were sent to the school principals in the targeted localities. All of them unanimously welcomed the noble vision of the organization, and approved that we select girls in the Central region by allowing us to conduct the visits to identified sites and mobilize school directors to identify scholars that deserve Pathways Togo's support.
At the Kamboli and Blitta sites, we had the support and testimony of school directors who had previously worked with Pathways Togo scholars. This allowed them to convince many girls about the quality of Pathways Togo scholarship program for girls' education. In Djarkpanga, we invited the principal of the Bolkatanga kindergarten, who is a Pathways Togo alumnae working in the area. This was an opportunity for her to thank donors who contributed to her social integration today and motivate young girls to strive for excellence in order to benefit from the Pathways Togo scholarship. One of our current scholar's mentors, who lives in the area, also gave her testimony on her roles and responsibilities as an official Pathways Togo mentor. She insisted not only on the voluntary nature of mentoring but also on the need for mentors to be available to respond to scholars' requests and needs at any time. These different testimonies greatly impacted the partners of the Kamboli and led to a better understanding of the qualities and skills needed to become Pathways Togo scholars' mentors.
We are proud that we received the support and acceptance of the community local authorities in the different localities we visited. NGO partners like Plan Togo, NGO Dimension Humaine, COGERES and Teachers Parents Association leaders and Women Leaders were instrumental to the success of the process.
By the end of February 2022 we will collect applications from the clusters visited and score them in March. Stay connected to see the 22 young girls who will be awarded the scholarship during the summer holidays.

FRIENDS OF TOGO GRANT AWARDED TO SUPPORT KARREN WAID DREAM AWARD PROJECTS

Pathways Togo created the Karren Waid Dream Award in honor of Karren Waid, a Peace Corps Volunteer who passed away during her service. Karren Waid’s family started a scholarship fund for girls and women in her honor after her death.  That fundation eventually became Pathways Togo. Karren’s commitment to girls' education and empowerment continues to inspire Togolese and Americans to support young women in achieving their personal goals and dreams. The Karren Waid Dream award is an opportunity for Pathways Togo scholars to help their communities and grow their leadership skills.  Scholars are empowered to identify a community need, meet with community partners, then draft a proposal to Pathways Togo for funding.  The scholars then defend their proposals in front of their peers and Pathways Togo staff and the best projects are selected for implementation.  This year ten projects were selected for implementation. The projects vary from renovation of wells, electrification of classrooms with solar energy, reforestation, renovation of classrooms, training high school students in computer skills and others. This year Friends of Togo is sponsoring all of the Karren Waid Dream Awards! We would like to say “grand merci” to Friends of Togo for the support of these projects and for the continuance of our partnership!

In January, the program’s beneficiaries received the funds to implement their respective projects. We will come back to you this summer to highlight the results and the impact of these different projects.
TRAINING AND RESOURCE GROUP AWARDED GRANT TO PATHWAYS TOGO TO MATH AND PHYSICS TUTORING PROGRAM

The Pathways Togo tutoring program will allow 46 of our middle school and high school scholars to succeed during this academic year in their studies, and especially help our scholars obtain very good results in scientific fields.  Through the tutoring program, Pathways Togo will support our scholars' interest in academic and professional pursuits in STEM fields.  A big thanks to the TRG Group for funding this very important program!
WELCOME NEW BOARD MEMBERS- SAHALETOU AND DANIEL

Sahaletou Yelebo (Saha) was born and raised in Togo, West Africa. In 2013, Saha joined the Integrated Health team in Togo where she worked as a community outreach coordinator and then was part of the team that launched the maternal and child health pilot program. Eager to explore her love for women's empowerment, Saha joined Pathways Togo in 2015, where she led the middle and high school program. While assisting young scholars and advocating for their educational rights, Saha saw firsthand the challenges girls face due to societal perceptions of women's roles in the society. This experience motivated her to attend graduate school to strengthen her skills in human rights advocacy. She moved to the United States in 2017, hoping to achieve this goal. Saha is completing her Master's in Human Rights Practice at the University of Arizona and hopes to graduate in the fall of 2022 while continuing to work with Integrate health as the Development and Communication Coordinator. Saha is excited to have the opportunity to continue helping Togolese girls from afar.
Daniel is a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer who served as a Community Health and Malaria Prevention advisor in Togo from 2016-2018. While in Togo, Daniel led the Malaria Action Committee, served as a Regional Coordinator for the Monitoring & Evaluation Task Force, and co-directed a camp for children with special needs along with fellow board member Austin Maggard. Daniel holds a BA in Cognitive Science from Case Western Reserve University and an MBA and MS Public Policy from Carnegie Mellon University. He is currently an Associate at Booz Allen Hamilton, a consulting firm based in Washington, D.C.
FAREWELL TO BOARD MEMBERS WINTER AND SHEA

On behalf of the Pathways Togo community, we would like to say an endless THANK YOU to Shea and Winter who have tremendously contributed to girl’s education in Togo for many years. Full lyrics of Mounira's poem, Dream Breaker

Hello! Hello! Dream Breaker.
This time, I will pick up your call.
I think I should settle your account.
Because, I have had enough of this silence that suffocates me.
There was a moment your speeches made in bad faith dissuaded me.
Made me believe that an educated girl is worth nothing at all.
Suddenly, for you, my destiny can only be summed up in a flash in the pan.
What a mess !!!
"Several girls go to school, but in the end, few come out victorious."
It's still your famous slogan.
For you, I do not know how to do anything except bring back unwanted, early pregnancies.
For you, I only have eyes on sex.
It is only in the kitchen, and in the bed that my prowess is summed up.
For you, I can only do geometry in space.
Leg work in the air is where my weak strength lies.
Sir, the dream breaker!
I know what I'm capable of.
I know my potential, as well as my limits.
I am the girl, the woman. I carry the weight of humanity.
My loving parents know me better than you do.
I am their hope. I am their star. I am their fortune.
For you, school makes me lazy, careless, selfish, dishonest…
Mr. Pessimist, dream breaker. If Angela Merkel was president why would it be impossible for me?
If Marthe Fare was able to win the Sembène Ousmane prize…
Know that I am also capable of it.
If Madame Victoire Tomegah-DOGBE was able to obtain the ministerial throne
Would that be impossible for me?
Pathways Togo believed in me, in us.
We are a legion destined to shine.
We are the girls. The wives. Those who carry the weight of humanity.
If you don't believe in us…
Know that our families. Our predecessors believe in us. And we also believe in ourselves.
Mr. Pessimist, dream breaker.
My place is not only in the kitchen.
My place is not only in the home.
My place is not only taking care of the children.
Educating women is empowering the world.
To educate a woman is to educate an entire nation.
We are carriers of light.
Despite the negative shadow you cast on us.
Mr. Pessimist, dream breaker.
I think I'm done.
So know that now, your ideals and prejudices,
enter the blacklist of our thoughts.
