YOUR DONATION HELPS SAHIYO TRAIN HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS IN YOUR COMMUNITY

Dear Sahiyo Supporters,

With your wonderful support, we've been able to provide vital training on female genital cutting (FGC) for healthcare workers.

In November 2021, Sahiyo team members conducted an informative Training for Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANEs). SANEs are registered nurses who have specialized training and education in providing healthcare to patients who have experienced sexual assault.  Education and awareness of FGC is essential to the healthcare that SANEs give.

This online event hosted over 200 participants and included discussions about:

  • Clinical consequences of FGC
  • Local and international legal conditions of FGC
  • Best practices on caring for survivors
This training allowed participants to engage in critical dialogue on how to engage with patients who are FGC survivors. This cultural humility-based training of healthcare workers helps improve the quality of life for survivors, generates better access to healthcare, and leads to greater prevention of FGC for generations to come.

On February 6th, we celebrated International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation. Similar to our SANE training, this United Nations annual awareness day is aimed at amplifying the outreach on FGC and its implications on survivors in their daily life.

This year’s Feb 6th theme is “Accelerate Investment to End Female Genital Mutilation”. It seeks to call attention to the need for increased investment in resources to support survivors. And prevent future generations from undergoing this harm.

Last year, the COVID-19 pandemic negatively impacted girls and women everywhere and disrupted the UN’s goal of ending all harmful practices including female genital mutilation. With this year’s theme, the UN hopes to accelerate investment to uplift survivors and reinvigorate efforts to eliminate female genital mutilation.

With your help, Sahiyo can bring greater awareness to FGC and its impact on survivors. Your donation helps us invest more in resources and training, like our SANE Sahiyo training, vital for survivors of female genital cutting.
