  Gilman Scholarship for Study Abroad
Who should apply?
If you are an undergraduate Pell recipient with an interest in studying or interning abroad this scholarship is for you! This year the Gilman Program has updated their travel restrictions and is allowing travel to an even wider range of countries.

What is it?
Since 2001 the Gilman Scholarship Program has been aiming to close the financial gap in regards to study and internship abroad programs across the country. While the goal of the program is to continue to improve national and economic security, the program allows students to become well educated in the culture, language and customs of another country. In addition to the promotion of spending time abroad, the Gilman Scholarship encourages students to study a language that has been identified as “critical” to national security. The U.S. Department of State is constantly updating these languages and providing support for more experiences each year. Students who choose to study one of the languages, which you can find listed on their website, can receive up to $3,000 in additional funding! 56% of Gilman scholars chose to study a language and many alumni say that including a language in their program was one of their best decisions. Over the years the program has increased opportunities for groups that are normally underrepresented in study abroad situations such as minorities, first-generation college students and students with disabilities. The Gilman scholarship will provide around 3,600 scholarships worth $5,000 that students can use for tuition, room and board, books, local transportation, airfare and passport/visa fees.

Did you know?
The Gilman Program provides a wide variety of resources and helpful tools in order to help students in every step of the process. Their website has a tool to help you find a program that might interest you, podcasts and even passport assistance!

The application is open now and is due on March 1, 2022 so be on the lookout for more upcoming information!

If you have any questions, email Professor Tina Steinau at asteinau@gsu.edu.
