Hi all,
You might have heard about the Ad-Hoc Advisory Committee of Senate on COVID Academic Planning and Policies (quite the mouthful of a name!), and you might have been wondering what kind of work happens there and why it matters to you. Last week, the committee sent a memo to Provost Manfredi to recommend several different measures, one of which was clarifying how decisions about absences and accommodations related to COVID-19 this semester need to be handled. I encourage you to read the memo, but as a TLDR:
An instructor that isn't providing lecture recordings or an online synchronous participation option needs to do something to accommodate a student who must miss class for a reason related to COVID-19. While there are a limited number of courses where accommodations may not be possible, instructors cannot unilaterally decide if their course is one. If the instructor genuinely believes that accommodating you isn't possible, they need to confer with the Dean of Students, the relevant Program Director, and the Department Chair– they can't just say by themself that it's impossible to accommodate you and leave it at that. If course accommodations aren’t possible, the Dean of Students, the relevant Program Director, and/or the Department Chair will work with you to figure out other solutions for your situation.
This has been a really complicated semester already and I know it's been difficult for a lot of people. If you're having accessibility issues this semester with your courses, please feel free to reach out to me at ua@ssmu.ca – it's our job to advocate for students! SSMU (and particularly the awesome Senate Caucus) are continually working on plans to best advocate for the needs of students this semester– so please stay tuned!

Salut tout le monde,
Vous avez peut-être déjà entendu parler du comité consultatif ad hoc du sénat au sujet des politiques et de la planification académique autour de la COVID-19. Tout un nom, je sais. Savez-vous quel genre de travaux il effectue et en quoi c’est important pour vous ? La semaine dernière, le comité a envoyé un mémo au prévôt Manfredi pour recommander certaines mesures, spécialement de clarifier comment les décisions concernant les absences et les ajustements liés à la COVID-19 doivent être gérées ce semestre. Je vous encourage à lire la communication au complet, mais voici un résumé !
Un membre du corps professoral qui n’offre pas des enregistrements de ses lectures ou une participation simultanée en ligne doit s’assurer d’accommoder quiconque rate un cours à cause de la COVID-19. Bien qu’il y ait un petit nombre de cours où les ajustements ne sont pas possibles, le membre du corps professoral ne peut pas décider de manière unilatérale s’il tel est le cas ou non. Il doit s’adresser au doyen de la communauté étudiante, à la direction de son programme et à la présidence du département. Il n’a pas le droit de le dire lui-même et de vous laisser pour compte. Si la conclusion est bel et bien qu’il n’y a pas de moyen de vous accommoder, les personnes concernées vont travailler avec vous pour trouver une autre solution.
Ce semestre est déjà très compliqué et je sais qu’il a été difficile pour un bon nombre d’entre vous. Si vous avez des problèmes d’accessibilité avec vos cours, sentez-vous à l’aise de m’envoyer un courriel à ua@ssmu.ca – c’est notre travail de défendre la communauté étudiante ! L’AÉUM (et surtout l’incroyable caucus sénatorial) est toujours en train d’élaborer un plan d’action pour mieux plaider vos besoins ce semestre – alors restez à l’affût!
