Pond Farm
February 25, 2021

Dear Stewards,

Earlier this week I had the pleasure of meeting Pond Farm protégé, Dorothy Herger, alongside Stewards’ Executive Director Emeritus Michele Luna, California State Parks’ Historian Kathleen Kennedy, and Dorothy’s friend Janet Gracyk.

Dorothy was born in 1924 and raised in Vallejo, CA, where she resides today. In the 1950s she first saw Marguerite Wildenhain’s pottery at Gump’s, an elegant San Francisco retail store founded in 1861. Inspired by what she saw, she attended Marguerite’s Pond Farm summer workshops from 1951-1960. She became a close friend of Marguerite and always regarded her as a mentor, going on to teach ceramics at Solano College from 1948-1983.

Dorothy has an impressive collection of Marguerite’s pottery. Even more impressive is the spirit she embodies and has lived as a ceramics aficionado and educator. If you are interested in ceramics or learning more about the history Pond Farm, join me by visiting the Pond Farm Exhibit in Sacramento or on a tour of Pond Farm in Austin Creek (information below).

Gratefully yours,

Justin Lindenberg
Executive Director

Whale Watch at Bodega Head
In Search of Migrating Whales
Join us to spot Pacific Gray Whales this weekend at the Bodega Bay Trailhead, just outside of the town of Bodega, from 10am to 2pm. Bring drinks, your lunch, a warm coat, maybe a lawn chair and binoculars... and keep your fingers crossed. Look for the Stewards volunteers in green "Whale Watch" vests to help guide you through this amazing experience. Ask questions, enjoy the beautiful coastal air, and meet with other whale enthusiast.

This Saturday (2.26.2022) your Docent Hosts will be Kate, Jeff and Mary Jo, and then this Sunday (2.27.2022) you will have the opportunity to meet with Norma, Joel, and Kate.

If you love the coast as much as we do, consider joining us for Sonoma Coast Community Education Zoom Webinar where we will talk in depth about the Sonoma Coast.  Click here to sign up.  Learn about ocean and bluff safety with Tim Murphy of California State Parks, Seabirds with Paul Hobi of NOAA, marine mammals with Phil Warren of the the Marine Mammal Center, Whales with Ryan Berger of the Marine mammal Center, and California’s Marine Protected Areas with Suzanne Olyarnik, PhD, of the Bodega Marine Reserve. Don't miss this exciting event!
Trail Crew
Eleven volunteers joined Scotty and Rachel for a rather chilling (36 degrees) briefing and safety talk prior to moving up to the warmer wood processing area for work. The BEAST did its job in splitting firewood as several Sawyers bucked up logs for splitting. Logs were pulled off the log deck for so the Sawyers could safely buck them up. Lots of debris cleared and burned in the wood processing area. Hazard trees were cleared along the road. Lunchtime found the crew eating lunch in the sun while Scotty and Rachel cooked their traditional chili dogs over a smoky fire.

Volunteers needed at our Jenner and Armstrong Visitor Centers
The Armstrong and Jenner Visitor's Centers need volunteers.  It's a fun and easy opportunity to help visitors enjoy the natural beauty of Armstrong and the Sonoma Coast.  Volunteers are needed for 3 hour shifts to provide information on the best walks/hikes, plants, animals in our parks and so much more.  We will train you on everything you need to know.  Whether you can do a weekly, monthly or occasional shift, we would love to have you join us to bring in important revenue to support Stewards programs.  Best of all, the hours quickly add up towards a day use parks pass.  Contact Kathi Moore at kathiimooree@gmail.com if you are interested.
Help remove ice plant at Bodega Head
Volunteers with California Native Plant Society meet the second Sunday of each month from 10AM to 1PM at Bodega Head to remove ice plant. Bring your gloves, clippers, knee pads, your friends... and meet new friends along the way!  Join us at the far west parking lot near the restrooms (Bodega Bay Trailhead on google maps). Text Alynn at 707-321-1748 to RSVP. Hard working teens encouraged! Only heavy rain cancels. Extra gloves, clippers and knee pads are available if needed.
2.20.2022 - Hi Folks; Here’s a few pictures from my trail patrol today on the Kortum Trail on a busy President’s Day weekend.  A bit cool and definitely windy, but pretty day out there nonetheless.  Cheers,  Mark
