Executive Update

Our ASUM team would like to wish you a very happy Valentine's Day! Here at ASUM, we are so lucky to get to do what we LOVE, working hard to make life better for UM System students. As we continue to advocate on behalf of our peers, we hope that you will take some time to do something you love!
To our Tigers, Roos, Miners, and Tritons: We are a quarter of the way through the Spring Semester! Around this time in the semester, tests and projects tend to pick up. As this happens, keep in mind the well-being resources that your university provides for you. As a fellow student, I understand the challenges this school year has brought for each of you. If you would like to discuss ways to make this University better for students like you, please reach out to me personally at claireshipp@mail.missouri.edu

To our legislators, UM System faculty & staff, alumni, and other valued readers:  I want to thank you for your continued support of our organization. If you are interested in partnering with ASUM to facilitate student learning, please reach out to asum@umsystem.edu!

Legislative Update

Hello Tritons, Roos, Tigers, and Miners!

The legislative session started on January 5th, and the ASUM Legislative Team is back in Jefferson City advocating for the interests of University of Missouri System students. The Legislative Team has returned to conducting in-person activities in the State Capitol and is resuming normal advocacy operations. The Board of Directors has approved several platforms for the Legislative Team to work on this legislative session:

We are currently working on a $2,000 STEM Grant which would be attached to the Access Missouri Financial Assistance Program. This grant would help offset the additional expenses that will fall to STEM students under the new differential tuition model. This legislation has been presented to several legislators and has been met with great interest from many offices that place an emphasis on the growth of the STEM economy in Missouri.

Additionally, we are working to advocate for the passage of the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact (IMLC) and Counseling Compact (CC). This legislation would ease administrative burdens on health professionals attempting to practice in Missouri. Reducing administrative burden could increase the number of mental health professionals available as a resource for the UM student body. IMLC has been sponsored by Representative Dan Shaul (HB 2004) and has been Second Read. We are currently working with the Representative’s office to determine upcoming steps to advance the IMLC legislation. Meanwhile, the Legislative Team is pursuing avenues to achieve sponsorship of the CC legislation.

Here are some articles we had our eye on this week:

More updates on our Legislative Team and happenings in the Capitol will be provided in future newsletters, so stay tuned!

Campus Chapter Updates

University of Missouri Columbia:

Greetings from ASUM Mizzou! We hope you all had a wonderful holiday season. We are so excited to be back on campus and are gearing up for a wonderful spring semester. On Wednesday, February 9th, we began the new semester with our “Cane’s and Games” Spring Semester Kick-Off Event. We had a great night full of fun and got to build community within our organization, as well as with the broader Tiger family, over board games, and delicious Cane’s chicken.

ASUM Mizzou also wants to shine a spotlight on Benjamin Hahs, one of our amazing legislative interns this semester, for being named Intern of the Week by our ASUM Legislative Team! Benjamin is a junior majoring in Economics at MU, and we are thrilled to have him on our team. We commend the outstanding work that Benjamin has done to advocate for UM System students in the Missouri State Capitol. Keep up the great work! Mizzou updates are written by Mizzou ASUM President, Matthew Bozeman.

Missouri University of Science and Technology:

ASUM at S&T is getting ready to have a great semester. We had our first meeting at the end of January and attended Spring-O-Rama to find new members to help us advocate for the students. We are looking forward to having many fun events this semester including Pie and Politics and a week-long voter registration drive.  Missouri S&T updates are written by S&T President, Chrysalin Martin.

University of Missouri Kansas City:

We’ve got great things in the works here at UMKC! Next week, we’ll be participating in two events. First, on Tuesday, we’ll be having Cookies with a Chief of Staff, where we’ll be virtually hosting Brad Green, Chief of Staff to State Sen. Tony Luetkemeyer. There’ll be cookies available, and a raffle! Second, on Wednesday, we’ll be offering voter registration at UMKC’s Black Entrepreneurship Panel. We can’t wait! UMKC updates are written by UMKC ASUM Chapter President, Sagi Rudnick.

University of Missouri St. Louis:

ASUM at UMSL is up and running! We will be having monthly general body meetings on the first Tuesday of every month at 6 PM. All students are welcome to attend these meetings. We will cover all kinds of topics related to civic engagement and public service. We will also be holding additional educational events like our Melanin and Mental Health event coming up on February 22 at 6 PM. We are excited to partner with other student organizations at UMSL. If you are a student leader and would be interested in working with us, please reach out! UMSL updates are written by UMSL ASUM Chapter President, Amanda Lopez.
