Legislative Update
Hello Tritons, Roos, Tigers, and Miners!
The legislative session started on January 5th, and the ASUM Legislative Team is back in Jefferson City advocating for the interests of University of Missouri System students. The Legislative Team has returned to conducting in-person activities in the State Capitol and is resuming normal advocacy operations. The Board of Directors has approved several platforms for the Legislative Team to work on this legislative session:
We are currently working on a $2,000 STEM Grant which would be attached to the Access Missouri Financial Assistance Program. This grant would help offset the additional expenses that will fall to STEM students under the new differential tuition model. This legislation has been presented to several legislators and has been met with great interest from many offices that place an emphasis on the growth of the STEM economy in Missouri.
Additionally, we are working to advocate for the passage of the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact (IMLC) and Counseling Compact (CC). This legislation would ease administrative burdens on health professionals attempting to practice in Missouri. Reducing administrative burden could increase the number of mental health professionals available as a resource for the UM student body. IMLC has been sponsored by Representative Dan Shaul (HB 2004) and has been Second Read. We are currently working with the Representative’s office to determine upcoming steps to advance the IMLC legislation. Meanwhile, the Legislative Team is pursuing avenues to achieve sponsorship of the CC legislation.
Here are some articles we had our eye on this week:
