TWO NEW HORSES TO LOVE THIS VALENTINE’S DAY!!

A Message From Tammy

Happy Valentine’s Day! We have a lot more to love here at the ranch! Last week we were honored to adopt two Retired Border Patrol Mustangs! Pictured here is Waylon, a 12 year old Grulla/Appaloosa Mustang. He was born in captivity in Fallon, Nevada. He already has many Heroes asking to work with him. I know he is going to change lives!

These past few weeks have been extremely busy. Not only were we getting ready for the Mustangs, we were able to make big progress on our Heroes garden. We had been waiting for someone that had the equipment to help us move some very large rocks. Thanks to Rick White of R A White Construction, he moved some heavy rocks to our Heroes garden and also graded the area for our Mustangs. Thank you Rick!!

Thank you also to Sandy Angione of Sandy Angione Real Estate our newest 2 Star - $2,500 sponsor for the 2nd Annual Saddles in Service Golf Tournament for her donation of sand and DG to our round pens to keep our horses comfortable in their work.

We also welcomed 7 new firefighters to our program! Our numbers of First Responders continues to grow at a rapid pace. Because of this rapid growth and interest in our program, we are making some adjustments so we can serve everyone who needs our program. After this week’s new orientations, we will hold off on having new orientations until May.

Thank you to all of our sponsors, donors and volunteers! Together we are making a difference in the lives of our Veterans, First Responders and their families! We look forward to seeing you at the ranch!

Hugs, Tammy

RETIRED BORDER PATROL MUSTANGS HAVE A NEW MISSION

Our two new horses have served the Border Patrol for almost their entire lives and now they are going to serve a new mission, helping heal Heroes here at Saddles In Service. Pictured here is our other Mustang, Chief Ouray AKA Apache. There is a story behind the name change which I will share a little later in this post.

Chief Ouray is a 15 year old Pinto, Mustang. He was captured in Sandwash Basin, CO on Oct 17, 2008. In September of 2010, he became a Border Patrol Agent. He has served our Nation well and due to a health issue, he was retired. After consultation with our veterinarian, Dr. Larry Martin, we decided to adopt him, take care of his surgery and give him a new purpose here at SIS. Dr. Martin is also the veterinarian for the Border Patrol so he knows Ouray’s health history.

Chief Ouray’s surgery is today! Prayers and well wishes are greatly appreciated. His costs for surgery will be approximately $5,000. Any amount donated will be much appreciated as we know this horse will also change lives. You can donate online or by check. Our mailing address is PO Box 692, Descanso, CA 91916. Thank you for helping us bring in another horse which will provide healing to our Heroes.

So, about his name change. One of Heroes, Branden V, felt there was something very special about Ouray (we all do), so he did research on the Mustangs captured in Sandwash Basin, CO. What Branden discovered was that the surrounding areas where he was captured was home to the Ute Indians. Ouray, meaning arrow, was the leader of a band of Ute Indians in Colorado. He was assigned the title of Chief Ouray by the US Government. He was known as a promoter of peace. Since our Heroes feel such peace when they are here working with the horses, Chief Ouray seemed like the perfect name for a horse from where the Ute Indians once lived.
