H2-Aero Symposium & Workshop is March 29-31
The 1st H2-Aero Symposium and Workshop will be held on March 29-31 in Long Beach, California. Following up on the successful programs on hydrogen for aviation produced by the VFS Hydrogen eVTOL Council in 2020-2021, VFS is bringing leading experts to discuss the promise, progress and barriers of implementing hydrogen fuel cells for eVTOL and other types of propeller aircraft. This is part of a new effort to help accelerate development and scale on both the hydrogen infrastructure as well as the fuel cell aircraft called H2-Aero.
The event will feature two days (March 29–30) of informative presentations and insightful discussions (the Symposium), as well as the Workshop for H2-Aero. Topics to be covered include aviation-relevant hydrogen storage, fuel cells in aerospace, and synergies with ground infrastructure, among many others. As a plus, there will be a tour of Toyota's hydrogen and fuel cell heavy duty vehicle facilities at the Port of Long Beach, California, on Thursday, March 31.

University Student Activities
VFS has a lot of student activities underway!
The VFS Student Design Competition challenges students to design an electric VTOL aircraft that accommodates passengers with a broad spectrum of mobility difficulties or other disabilities for urban air mobility (UAM) missions. The competition, entitled, “eVTOL Air Taxi for Passengers with Reduced Mobility (PRM),” is sponsored this year by Bell, and is open to students at universities worldwide. We had some 20 university teams from around the world apply by the deadline! Stay tuned for more news.
The 8 university teams participating in the VFS Design-Build-Vertical Flight (DBVF) Student Competition passed its next milestone. Congratulations to the following teams who received awards for having the top Preliminary Design Reports:
- 1st Place – Pennsylvania State
- 2nd Place – Michigan
- 3rd Place – Ohio State
VFS announced its DiversiFlite program last year to promote diversity, inclusion and equity in the vertical flight workforce. In January, we launched our DiversiFlite Podcast and our DiversiFlite Scholars program, which seeks to provide opportunities for underrepresented university students who have an interest in vertical flight. The program selects engineering students at any US-recognized Minority Serving Institution (MSI) for an all-expenses-paid trip to the Society's 78th Annual Forum & Technology Display in May in Ft. Worth, Texas.
The deadline to apply as a VFS DiversiFlite Scholar is March 15.
