Study Group "Integrated Protection of Date Palms"

IOBC-WPRS Bulletin Vol. 155, 2021

Proceedings of the 1st International Conference at the Arabian Gulf University, Manama, Kingdom of Bahrain,
13-14 March, 2017

The Group’s initial conference was organized to focus on five topics:
  1. Major date palm pests;
  2. Control methods (cultural, chemical, physical, biological);
  3. IPM strategies;
  4. Economically feasible alternatives to methyl bromide postharvest use; and
  5. Molecular approaches to date pest management.

IOBC-WPRS Study Group for "Integrated Protection of Date Palms":
Participants of the 1st conference in Manama, Kingdom of Bahrain, 13-14 March, 2017.
The Integrated Protection of Date Palms Study Group was created in 2016 with two general objectives.
  1. Promote research, development, implementation and training in Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Systems, including biological control in date palm orchards and packing houses.
  2. Collect, evaluate and disseminate information to promote national and international public awareness of the economic, ecological and social importance of new developments in date palm protection.
These proceedings present important research findings of scientists directly engaged in dealing with the complex components of pest control in date palm. Deservedly, the greatest attention is being directed toward the red palm weevil. Management of this insect in already infested areas, as well as the prevention of its further spread to not-yet-infected geographic areas, is the paramount challenge of twenty-first century date farming. But that emphasis does not diminish the value of research into the control and management of secondary date palm pests since they could surge from their present level of threat under the influence of climate change. The grave threat posed by bayoud disease cannot be overstated.

Successful and sustainable future date fruit production is a key food security issue, especially in the arid and semiarid Middle East/North Africa (MENA) countries.
