The Secret Poetry Room Materializes!

I am so grateful to all the supporters of the Molly Peacock Secret Poetry Room in the Bartle LIbrary at Binghamton University.  It's a secluded space that will provide future poets and writers with a tiny room, a comfy chair, a small desk and a bookshelf—a secret place to write and think.  It's my way of providing creativity for a diverse population, one person at a time.

Now we're actually ready to build the writing hideaway!  I'll be keeping you posted with photos as the  build-out develops.

The pandemic led us think about virtual ideas that would connect to The Secret Poetry Room, and those thoughts are still in the air.  Our intention now is to continue to raise an endowment for the maintenance and future of the room, and this may very well include virtual extensions.

Please give a Valentine to The Secret Poetry Room here.

It’s a registered charity both in the United States and Canada. You really can give what you can:  this project was built on small contributions from people passionate about this idea.

Poetry & Miniatures
Two Sundays in March; Two Sundays in April, 2022

both in person & online

This seminar and workshop explores the power of the tiny in poetry. From a radish to a sequin to a zipper on a backpack, we will examine and write poems devoted to small subjects that suddenly grow in significance. We will also explore a variety of short forms from the haiku to the cinquain. A single chapter, “Miniature,” in Gaston Bachelard’s The Poetics of Space will guide us as we investigate the allure of the microcosm, reading poems ranging from the 10th century Li Ch’ing Chao to contemporary poet Rachel Betesch. This class is available for students both in-person and online and is recommended for any poetry level, from beginner to advanced. Text for first two classes: The Poetics of Space by Gaston Bachelard.

Students may purchase Maria Jola’s translation of Bachelard’s The Poetics of Space at Bookshop or by calling the Corner Bookstore.

Class meets Sundays 2-5pm EST: March 6, 13, April 3, 10.

              Now an audiobook!

In FLOWER DIARY, I was a viewer captivated by a painted voice.  In the audiobook of FLOWER DIARY, I'm a listener captivated by a new voice, the perfect narrator for Mary Hiester Reid, Toronto-based actor and writer, Alicia Payne. If you think that a visual book like the sumptuously produced FLOWER DIARY can't be transmogrified to audio, think again.  The voice of Alicia Payne--in textures from fine linen to rough cotton to sexy silk to sturdy wool--releases the text into an intimate aural experience.
